If I could give it a 3.7, I'd bump it up.

fair enough
this stuff is right up my alley, I love pretty much every minute of it

I just feel like CtS, Remission, and Leviathan all bash the crap out of this. Still like quite a few
songs on here, though.

CtS doesn't really do anything for me, Remission and Leviathan are a lot different than this but I love them both

CtS just has their most interesting songwriting to me, but I guess if you're not really into prog, it won't be that appealing. This just feels like watered-down versions of riffs they've already done and pretty one-note songwriting (minus a few tracks, obviously). Their "quirkiness" still comes through in a lot of the lyrics, but there are just so many forgettable tracks on here.

I always thought the songwriting on this was much tighter and focused than on CtS - as epic as that
record is, it had its self-indulgent bits. This album feels like Mastodon have stripped away all the
excess and just made a awesomely fun metal album. I think they had to move in a different direction
after CtS anyway - it took the prog-metal-ridiculous concept style to it's apotheosis IMO

I like prog when it's executed well. I just don't think it's Mastodon's forte.

^agree with that
I like this because it's extremely well-executed mainstream-ish metal (i.e. Alice in Chains, black album era Metallica) mixed with a lot of the elements I liked about earlier Mastodon albums.

It does a good job of compressing their weirder impulses into palatable lengths. Stargasm and Thickening rule

"I'd like to, dude, but this record is so hit-or-miss for me. Half of it is kickass, the other half is boring."
i thought so too at first, but the rest of the songs grew on me a lot. the only song i still dont like is Creature Lives

I think part of it is the vocals. Some of Mastodon's vocal performances over the last few records haven't been spectacular.

I think these are the best vocals since Leviathan, but I definitely agree in regards to Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye
|
| |
It's cool how they managed to twist their sound so much without actually losing any core dynamics

problem I had with Crack the sky was while I really liked it when it first came out, the more I listen to it the more bored with it I became. This album has a lot more energy to it and I enjoy it more.

I might bump this to a 4.5 actually, it's growing on me even more

"Personally, the last time i heard non-triggered drums was in Confessor's Unraveled album." - Nice Confessor reference! Great band!
One aspect I really like about this record is it sounds like dudes that like writing and playing music together, and they each display their own uniqueness to every individual song. The vocals on this one are definitely the best since Leviathan, I agree Inveigh.
