I could go and say the same thing about a dozen different post-hardcore bands.

I exclusively refer to the using of Death Metal into their music. They've surely sacrificed it for some good reasons. They probably felt they couldnt add it anymore on the table in order to evolve toward something else that might prevent them to get too redundant. It's my too Canadian cents. Deux sous, oui.
edit; half an hour later, Jethro hahaha

One thing is sure, they did the good move in order to survive.
Une chose est certaine, ils ont fait ce qu'il fallait pour survivre.

"One thing is sure, they did the good move in order to survive."
I totally believe that. With Akerfeldt's growls on life support they kinda had no choice but to move on unfortunately.

I honestly don't think his growls are on life support, but I'll be able to say one way or the other
when I see them in a couple weeks.

Mike's growls are truly phenomenal aren't they. He's the king by a mile in it.

I don't know. After seeing Master's Apprentices live in July, the first words were a total wtf moment. It actually threw me off I paid attention to just his growls and was stunned. It's more of a really raspy high than the deeper growls he's been known for.
I mean when you've been doing this for 20+ years I can see his voice just giving out at this point. Even my singer realizes it and actually hates the way his growls sound now. I could be wrong, he can still growl, it's just not nearly as powerful as in the past.

^Hah, I see. So those who wish an eventual return of Akerfeldt' growls risk to be deceived.

Yeah, no.
After 15 listens this is my one word review:
Booooooooring... (2.75/5 not sure if I'm going to round up or down...)
Too bad because I really wanted to like it.
And don't assume that the lack of "deathliness" and "growliness" is discouraging me.
After all, my 2nd favorite band of all times is the ethereal and divine Dead Can Dance...
My reason for not liking it, is well, the album is just not that interesting...
I wouldn't call it "DT pretentious" but it's definitely marching towards that unfortunate direction.
I think that for Opeth this is a music shift by necessity and not by choice.
It's quite obvious that Mikael Akerfeldt's growling prowess and ability has deteriorated significantly and his vocal cords
just can't take it anymore.
Too bad Opeth didn't hire a "backup growler" to fill in... ;)
PS "Watershed" average? Sistah, please!
