This album is just full of prog, it is progtastic. Though we shouldn't be surprised that Opeth would go a different direction. Though like most of their albums I will have to give it some time before I come to a rating. Also I don't know if that album cover is the worst or best one they have.
Also if anyone is interested in some really good progressive death metal that has been released this year with little publicity check out Ana Kefr - Burial Tree II. If Akerfeldt did the vocals on that album it would be a definitive 5. Possible album of the year

I actually think it's one of their better ones. If you look on their website there's a massive explanation of the art. Everything on it basically ties into where they are as a band, it's actually pretty interesting.

I have read it before, though I just find the faces in the tree quite comical. Though to each its own I guess.

intro rips off erik satie. good times

upon first listen, this album is fun but kinda disjointed and lacking the cohesiveness that made other Opeth albums so powerful.

man the "disjointed" criticism of this album really bothers me
probably because this is no more disjointed or lacking in cohesion than their previous 4 or 5 albums

It's actually a nod to Jan Johansson's Jazz pa Svenska.
|
| |
yeah that's just the way opeth does things. people are using it as an excuse so they don't have to
admit that they just aren't into classic prog.

I'd highly recommend looking up that album if you're into jazz and/or Scandinavian folk as it combines the two pretty well.
|
| |
well, regardless of whether it's common in this type of prog is irrelevant, i think, because i just don't really care for it. it's my main problem with progressive, all across the board. and Inveigh I haven't heard their last five albums so I would have no idea
