I don't usually comment on here ( no shit..I've got like ten comments ), I more or less scour the huge database of reviews to find new music. But such a heated debate has inspired me to comment.
First off, this album sucks. Maybe its not 2 bad, but its definitely no better than a 3 on its best day. As far as I'm concerned this band was over after their second cd... even though I did enjoy a handful of tracks off of DMD quite a bit despite everyone thinking it sucked through and through.
That being said, this site has probably the worst opinion of metal out of the ten or so other music sites I frequent. I'm not going to go into specifics but suffice it to say that I disagree wholeheartedly with more metal reviews here than anywhere else on the web...which is fine I guess, everyone's got their own thoughts about what makes good metal, but I'll stick with Metalreview.com as my go-to site for that genre. This site is just REALLY elitist, and I can't help but agree with the other poster that said everyone here just lemmings the shit out of staff ratings. Its all just a matter of opinion, which is why I don't get why you people slam each others ratings just to defend your own. its pretty sad.

Crysis: Yes you did. And since then, you've lowered your rating of HU and have done nothing but badmouth the band. Obviously your opinion has changed so I don't see why you're using that as a defence.
I wouldn't say a drop from a 4 to a 3.5 is anything to write home about in regards to a changed opinion. Instead of thinking the album is "excellent", I think it's "great", wow what a stark contrast.
You fail to note that I (as well as virtually everyone else on this site) only bitch about their two newest albums because they deserve to be bitched about. There are no more songs that beg more than a small handful of plays, and riffs like the lead to "Chaosweaver", the replay value of their more unorthodox songs like "Ghost Prototype II" and the solos of songs like "Veil Of Illusions" or even the catchy-ness of the songs like the awesome chorus to "Morphogenesis" are all dead and gone. Their songwriting is awash with the same ideas that aren't realized like they used to be. Believe it or not, their more progressive qualities that are present here have been with the band probably since their inception, it's just here the songwriting is way too bland to take advantage of its positives. Both vocalists do their parts adequately, but they rely too much on the shift between the two to usher in a sense of change and new atmosphere to the tracks, when that job is best left to the guitars. Not to mention the fact that the bass is virtually useless (which is a god damn shame) and the drums never rise above anything marginally decent to impress us with a fill that may perhaps save this album from itself.
So there's the justified 2 in a nut shell.

Sums up my thoughts of the band exactly.

This website is made for people who have no knowledge on what reviewing an album actually means. It's not surprising to me at all to see that this album (Which is far better than Dark Matter Dimensions) also got a low score.
You can say what you want about Scar Symmetry, but they worked their asses off on this record. That is completely evidenced by how much stronger the structure of both the lyrics and song writing are on this LP. This is a huge improvement from their last record, and if you say this is garbage, why not go listen to Justin Bieber, since that is supposedly the "popular" thing to engage in musically these days.
If you're going to review an album, concentrate on the fundamentals of the music and not your own personal opinion. I read reviews so I can get a basic feel of what the record will sound like, not to hear some idiot bash the record because it sucks to him. That is not a review.
In short, if you don't like the band or the music, don't fucking listen to it. Simple. It makes you look like a complete moron reviewing an album from a band you don't like when all you're going to do is bash them anyway based on that dislike.

It's amazing the kind of reaction that a simple negative review is getting. This is beginning to remind me of Jared's Universum review with all the fans coming in unable to accept an opinion that differs from their own.

It's a negative review without a purpose. It's a bunch of bitching without any concrete facts on the music itself.

I'm a fan of the band, sure, but I'm also objective without subjecting myself to personal feelings on my opinions. That is what a review is about. Even if I didn't like the band, this review would still be a piece of garbage.

The problem on this site is that there arent actually any objective reviews. Thats why in some reviews for popular bands u will see reviewer rates ranging from 2 to maybe 5.
And the last paragraph of XIVIX's text pretty much summarises what done wrong.

This is wrong in so many ways. It's not that simple.

So because people have different ratings for reviews, none of those ratings are objective?
What an awesome philosophy. The simple fact that you rated this album, according to your own theory, makes your rating not even remotely objective. If that is the case, how can I take what you have to say about this album seriously?

You guys need to fucking chill and realize your opinion isn't the rule. Music is subjective, deal with it.

It seriously defies human nature to give a purely objective opinion on anything. There will always be bias, regardless of whether it's visible or not.
I have a feeling like this argument has happened many, many times here before but people still insist otherwise.

It's not simple? How not? If I don't like a band or an artist, I'm not going to listen to them. I will simply say "This is not my kind of music" and be done with it. It really is that simple.
Example, I don't like Justin Bieber's music, so I'm not going to listen to him. Plain and simple. No complications needed. Want to know why? It's not my style of music. Why is that? Because I don't enjoy the lyrical content, Pop beats or mainstream appeal it has. I'm not going to sit around saying it sucks, cause quite frankly, what do I know? I just like what I like, but bashing the artist is childish.
People who will bash or degrade the quality of a certain bands music just because they don't like them is silly. It's an immature way of trying to get your point across.
One last thing, it's very possible to be 100% objective about an opinion without being subjective based on emotions.
|
| |
There's a difference between shamelessly bashing an artist, and maturely explaining why you dislike a record... I don't see any terrible insulting going on here from the review directly.
Reviews are opinions. The thing that makes this website different from others is that users are permitted to submit their reviews; everybody's opinion is welcome. If you don't understand why people listen to music they don't like, then why read reviews you don't like?
