well I mean I guess it just depends on what you mean by metalcore
are we still counting bands like Unearth, Killswitch Engage, Bleeding Through, God Forbid etc. as metalcore? because if so I'd say they were part of the underground metal scene. but at this point, it makes more sense to call Converge, Botch, Coalesce, Poison the Well, Dillinger et al "metalcore" and call that other stuff something else.
Like NWOAHM -- throw them in there with Shadows Fall, Lamb of God, DevilDriver and the like. so then I guess metalcore isn't part of the metal underground.

Inveigh, those first bands you mentioned were a later wave of metalcore that took a lot of influence from melodeath. People call that "melodic metalcore", and it's the one most people are referring to when they complain about metalcore.

lol Zanders I know that I'm just saying it really shouldn't be considered metalcore at all -- when I first joined this site the debate between 1st wave and 2nd wave metalcore was raging like a Charlie Sheen hard-on after 4 viagra and a stripper binge
I'm just saying they sound nothing alike so calling them melodic metalcore and Converge metalcore isn't really appropriate. like, Metallica evolved from hardcore punk but incorporated loads of NWOBHM into their sound -- we don't call them melodic hardcore punk.
