to me the biggest lie is just about wanting something(maybe a relationship) to work out so badly that you end up fooling yourself. you dedicate so much to it and spend yourself into debt and end up disheartened, confused, and defeated. it's about trying so much to make something unworkable work that you end up in a worse situation.
^ugh i don't even know if thats right, but i think it could work. i feel like it could apply to many things, relationships, drug addiction, loosing the will to live etc.

real nice review.

"either way, they're both lies... because real relationships fall somewhere in the middle, when you think enough about it. it really hits home, for me, because in real life I tend to take things too serious with my relationship or be too dramatic, in both positive and negative ways... and I think this is a reminder to try and stay grounded."
i agree

southern belle and christian brothers
just amazing

I find this to be one of the most depressing and fulfilling albums to just lose myself in. I would listen to it on repeat forever if it wouldn't eventually become too much to bear. Never connected this deeply with any of his other albums, even though Either/Or comes close to giving me the same feeling.

wish more people posted their interpretations to the biggest lie, it still baffles me to this day

just for u
I'm waiting for the train
Subway that only goes one way
The stupid thing that'll come to pull us apart
And make everybody late
he's waiting for a reason/excuse to leave a relationship he is not enjoying. it has to be "a train" because he's too much of a coward to take responsibility himself. he thinks that "making everybody late" will make everyone mad at him, so he is hesitant
You spent everything you had
Wanted everything to stop that bad
Now I'm a crashed credit card registered to Smith -
Not the name that you called me with
they both tried to make it work, but now his "credit card" or his willpower has expired, and he also realises he's being deceiving his partner about himself, as to her he was known as a name other than Smith
You turned white like a saint
I'm tired of dancing on a pot of gold-flaked paint
Oh we're so very precious, you and I
And everything that you do makes me want to die
Oh I just told the biggest lie
I just told the biggest lie
The biggest lie
less sure about this part, i think he's coming to terms with the extent he dislikes the relationship. he calls their relationship "precious" because he's afraid of being alone and a part of him wants to make it work. "the biggest lie", i think, is "i love you", so at the end he gives up and settles for a person he ultimately doesnt like

i just wish i could figure out what the biggest lie is. is it one of the two prior lines or a blend of them like eric said? is it something not explicitly stated in the song like ffs said? drives me crazy
