Anyway, I've always felt like this was a direct result of Jim Matheos' disappointment. Parallels finally pushed them into the limelight. There were music videos and radio air play, and bigger concerts, but then Inside Out didn't take them any further. So, he said, "Fuck it. If the mainstream doesn't want us, might as well make one giant fucking song..." except his heart wasn't actually into it.

This album has topped off Perfect Symmetry for my favorite Fates Warning album.
Fuckin hell this is a great grower, have no idea how this wasnt so immediate for me at first listen.

Most of Fates' stuff isn't immediate, it wasn't for me anyway. This album is complex in its layers and pretty dark, which wasn't really the most popular thing for a prog metal band at the time

Perfect Symmetry, Inside Out, Disconnected, and Parallels were all a love at first listen for me. Awaken the Guardian and The Spectre Within were too Power Prog for me when I first heard it. This one ticks a lot of boxes that I can fuck with so its weird I didnt dig it hard on first listen and needed to give it a second go. But I fuck with it now so whatever.
