I could easily say the same about those who like the album, that they went into it with massive expectations and their desperation to enjoy the album makes them overlook the numerous and crippling faults here.
It's funny that you should say that, because most of the crippling faults you pointed out are what make this album good, like the electronics on Black Lake. I guess it really is just a perspective thing. It's really hard to understand how someone can have such a different view of an album when you like it so much.
And then out of that many just respond with "review sucks, troll neg, awful person" over something as trivial as a rating for an album.

Fuckin negs. The review is clearly well-written despite what one's opinion of the album may be.
My favorite thing on here is "Into the Painted Grey." I think it's one of the best things Agalloch have ever done.

Totally agree with this, I find myself thinking that sometimes when people dislike an album I love haha

It's sputnik so I expected a fair share of those with this review.

I find myself thinking "Ghosts Of The Midwinter Fires" to be the best song on the album, but had "Black Lake Nidstang" ended at the ten minute mark that would easily be the best.

The vocals on "Into the Painted Grey" are sooo good. Probably the best John's done.

disagree whole-heartedly. those hypnotic guitars after the 10 minute mark, the wall of sound explosion near the end which slowly returns to those beautiful guitars.... aaaaaaaa fangasmmm
(that was aimed at the post by Crysis btw)

Probably the best John's done.
I would give that honor to "I Am The Wooden Doors", but to each his own.

Certainty not their worst album.

"but had "Black Lake Nidstang" ended at the ten minute mark that would easily be the best."
YES, I really can't pick a favorite though, I feel each song has it's fair share of awesome sections.

I was definitely disappointed at the lack of John's creepy leprechaun vocals however.

Didn't listen to the 2 songs they released before the album leaked. So based on the intial reception they got, I went into this expecting them to be the weakest here, especieally "The Watcher's Monolith".
I have to say that I like that song better than the next released "Ghost of the Midwinter Fires". Still sort of dull within album context.
As of now my favorites are "Black Lake Nidstang", "Into the Painted Grey", and "The Watcher's Monolith". All very close.

I dig most of the experiments on this album but I can see how one would find them uninteresting, especially not being prepared for it. I was stoked that agalloch went in a direction that I didn't expect. It may not be as solid as Ashes but I feel like it's a refined compilation of the sounds of past albums (mostly Pale Folklore). Ghost of the Midwinter Fires is the only one that I find to be somewhat lackluster.
