I've never listened to this band, but the choir and orchestration element sounds interesting. Is it overbearing or is it an actual compliment to the music?

Oh darn, is it really that bad? Some reviews I read from other sites seem to praise this a lot.

Haha alright, I see your point, but curiosity will probably get the best of me. I'm new to black metal, so I wouldn't really know if it were good or not to be honest.

i wouldnt even consider this black metal. if you're just getting into it start with the classics
Ulver - Bergtatt
Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky
Bathory - Blood Fire Death

and then branch out to some newer stuff like
Moonsorrow - Verisakeet
Enslaved - Isa
Wolves in the Throne Room - Two Hunters
Negura Bunget - Om
Drudkh - Autumn Aurora

Oh alright, is like melodic death metal then?

nah, it's like some weird middle ground between gothic metal and symphonic black metal. since they were a decent black metal band on Stormblast there's still a lot Black metal influence and ideas but they've all been neutered. it's rather gimmicky.

Well actually it would probably be easier for you to get into other black metal if you listened to things like this first and then branch out to other things, but you can do what you want.

it can go either way. Bergtatt and Isa were the albums that got me hooked.

Yeah it could go either way. For me I listened to the more "mainstream" bands first like Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, and Graveworm and then branched out into things like Ulver, Emperor, Darkthrone and things like that.
