What can I say? What can I say? I genuinely do not know how to address the review, since I'm unsure how serious you want to be taken Eric. Needless to say however, the R.O.C comment simply was not required. I know you are trying to make a general point (as well as gain attention), but come on.



Without going into the specifics of the review, it is obviously well-written. Then again, we all know you can write, or else you would not have been promoted to Contributor.

a few important things to address.


a few people: you're taking me too seriously, analyzing my 'intentions' too much, looking for too much there. it's a fucking amateur music review site, for godsakes.

davey: thanks for bringing up the point about 'how seriously to take me,' while my feelings toward the album certainly aren't in jest, parts of the review were... it's obviously nothing personal (except for the relationship you have with Emery and the fact I want to throw them over a boat)

other people: wtf how do you NOT realize the pertinence of me name-dropping post-hardcore bands?! I thought it was obvious in my review but maybe I wasn't clear enough. who cares how I 'come off' really, when it was important to the point I was making.

other other people: this isn't a t.b.t., I COULD have mentioned other songs, but I think I got my point across without doing it, and personally I like reviews like that

but my point is that people are making my review too personal, like because I name-dropped some old post-hardcore bands (incredibly pertinent to my point) I must be some old-p.h. elitist that just hates on Emery because they're new. they missed the whole point of the review, then, and obviously either I didn't do a good enough job at backing up points or writing clearly or they're making the review about the reviewer.

That, and your review reeks of pretense and grammatical errors. That, and if you're going to sit by that 1.5. You need a lot more than what you've got in terms of complaints.

chan: ok, now I feel like we're getting somewhere. I agree that Emery's moved things so far away from predecessors that it can hardly even be considered post-hardcore anymore by like, musical standards I guess, but the fact that it is kinda opens it up to criticism, I feel. ugh I really hate looking back and seeing how much importance I placed on 'genre' here... but the fact really is that Emery is just simply an intensely watered-down version of something that used to be great, and I feel that's reason enough (along with other little points) to warrant the hate. I mean we can argue about genre and both come out losers, but Emery are the face of the process that took passionate music and dumbed it down, is my point, and I feel a valid one.

and yeah, I was well-aware that I would get negative attention for mentioning those bands, but honestly I don't care much considering it was crucial to my point- I'm confident in that. I know what my intentions were behind this review and little insinuations from upset users aren't gonna make me second guess those.

tombits: thanks for the encouragement, I really feel like a lot of users got what I was trying to (and sometimes more importantly trying NOT) to say here, but it always disgruntles me when some don't and I'm trying to figure out why. chan's good at complaining about that, which is a help, honestly

and the basis of my review isn't necesarily that Emery is shitty post hardcore, it's that Emery took good post hardcore and made it shitty, WHATEVER it is now.

MJ: I don't think it's anything new or to be that embarrassed about... Jom did it in his latest review too. it's not like I'm trying to cover my tracks, some people just missed my pt (partially my fault) and made faux-tracks up for me.
