i don't understand why people would 5 due to hype but i guess some people are easily influenced and.. you know, dumb. my hopes are that people just truly love the album which i don't find hard to believe. and sure if you know your second point for a fact then i'll bow down to your supreme knowledge and power and never argue with you again, but i personally know a lot of people on this site that get banned a lot and they never do that.

In other news, I covered The Sprout and The Bean at a show last week.

I only hope it showed them the light.

Oh how it was a funny little thing, it was a funny, funny little thing.

This has really been getting to me. Hold on, lemme bump the rating up.

It's beyond catchy and I have a fetish for minimalist music.
Also to bump Ys would be to suggest it is a classic. It's not.

Yeah as an AMBIENT COMPOSER AND PRODUCER I understand the aesthetic for catchy folk music.

Ok so I read the discussion on this album today and decided to give it a go. I have a really serious question: How the fuck could anyone listen to this and think it's good? I'm not just being an asshole here. I really don't get it. Her voice makes me want to beat her until she's retarded (if she's not already.) It just sucks

I came across this article by chance, and had no idea who Joanna Newsom was. That was several months ago. I purchased the albums that seem to be the focal point (Mender and Ys) and bookmarked the review so at some point I would able to compare thoughts, because I thought the claims made were a tad outrageuous, and you all seemed very passionate about one side or the other. At the risk of angering those who I can only consider my peers, I have to say I am very pleased I purchased hard copies of these albums; this was I was allowed to return them.

I say this not with pretentious intent, rather as an opinion, I found nothing in either of these albums pleasing. I do not see how Ys is any better a show of her talent, rather, they both posed equal amounts of stress on my ears.

That being said.
I found this article to be a little harsh, as I'm sure to some, ms Newsom's melodies are relaxing, and just because I do not agree with that fact does not mean I do not see the things that could be appealing to someone of differing tastes.

This thread does, on the other hand, reek of pretension and self aggrandizing. To the writer, your sole interest in things only considered classical seems all too purposeful and holier than thou. I find no credibility in what is simply a list of composers, or your claim of a doctorate (which holds no significance to me personally. I have multiple degrees, some of which are pertinent to this area, but which I will not flaunt to gain respect). Had you not come off more grating than the album you criticize, I would have seen you as at least educated in either modern or classically composed pieces. What is your favorite composition by your favorite 20th century master, with legitimate reasoning aside from the fact that it sounds impressive to the uneducated?
To (some) of you who replied, I only ask you not take these reviews so personally, but always with a grain of salt.

That sounds awfully presumptuous to me. But to answer your question, I think I'd say that my favorite work from the 20th century is probably the Quatuor pour la fin de temps. Messiaen is one of my favorite composers (and Vingt regards could take the Quatuor's place on any other day) for many reasons but his ear for harmony is what really stands out to me. Much has been made about his synesthetia and how its affected his music (blue-orange chords, anybody?) but even if we didn't have those wonderful descriptors it would still be captivating. The Quatuor's gorgeous and lyrical melodies blend with those harmonies in a sublime manner that, in my humble opinion, is unsurpassed by any other work of chamber music in the 20th century. The Praise to the Eternity of Jesus is the movement that seems to get the most attention, but I've always found the Praise to the Immortality of Jesus to be the most stunning display of Messiaen's artistry. The movement is deceptively simple, just a violin melody and heartbeats in the piano - and over the period of eight minutes, something really transcendental happens, something intangible... but by god, you know it's there.

Which brings me to my second point about your comment - implying that somebody needs "legitimate reasoning" in order to back up their claims of enjoyment is...well, it's rude and effectively ignores why we love music in the first place - we love music because it speaks to us in ways that we can't fully explain. Sure, there have been abstract works of art in other mediums that have a similarly inexplicable impact - but music is inherently abstract. Even music with lyrics, because a melody or a beat or any sound will carry its own impact. Music is at once multidimensional and singular. We listen because we don't understand.
