If it's a rock band, stick it in the Rock section.

not what i wanted but still a good album. I was hoping for The '60 Sound or something

Thinking about moving this to 4.5. At first it was kind of hard to separate the faster songs even though they have good hooks, but it's growing on me.

I think I'll forget about how good the '59 Sound is and get this album. I don't want to be disappointed.

Really, really disappointed with this album. Uninspired song writing to the max.

Na, I'm awesome to the max. This album is not. Not even a shadow of the greatness of the '59 sound.

It's a very solid rock album, but in a way it's just "The 59 Sound" revisited. Could have been more I guess. Still very enjoyable, and a good summer record

very samey plus the vocals aren't as good on this one

Kinda disapointing to me, but still a pretty solid album. The vocals were so much better on The '59 Sound. Something about them here irks me a bit, like hes trying too hard or something I don't know. Queen of Lower Chelsea is a sick tune though.

One thing that has really improved from the 59 sound is the drum sound quality. While the retro sound worked really well for vocs and guitars on 59, the drums got the short end of the stick. Perhaps that's just what Ben Horowitz was going for (that early springsteen drum sound), but personally, I like Max Weinberg's more recent stuff (the Rising and onwards) where you really get a sharp or distinct from each drum and cymbal. On American Slang, Gaslight has moved closer to that distinctive sound and away from the retro dull thumpiness that is, if anything, bland.

Boxer is an ace song.

I love this album and though it far from perfect, I'm trying not to overanalyze it in terms of what it's supposed to be. Kind of agree with tom79 a little bit and I think a couple of the songs have that "samey" feel but nonetheless, American Slang, Stay Lucky, The Diamond Street Church Choir, The Queen of Lower Chelsea, and Boxer are all amazing tracks. Overall, I'd say I like this album about as much as the '59 Sound but for different reasons. Brian Fallon is the man.

I've heard The '59 Sound and it was kinda boring for me. The vocals weren't very strong but from the sound of it American Slang is better.

While not as immediate (partially due to it being back-loaded) as its predecessor, ‘American Slang’ is another excellent LP from The Gaslight Anthem. Suggesting that a lack of truly memorable tracks means this is the weakest of their 3 releases is by no means derogatory, and the album’s consistency is again a strength. Moving marginally away from their punk roots (despite many superb guitar lines & thumping drums), the band vary their sound more here, creating a spacious Americana/Classic Rock feel. The song-writing is once more exquisite; with a winning over-riding theme of striving for the American dream, but moving on once it isn’t fully achieved. Recommended Tracks: Old Haunts, The Spirit of Jazz, American Slang & Boxer.
