Why would they even bother separating them into 2 tracks? Dream Theatre hardly shy away from long tracks. Ownage either way.

I got into dream theater for a bit, and then got into real progressive bands ( you know, classics like King Crimson, Camel and Yes ). Now I hate these mofos. They're the equivalent of going up their own asses with their instruments. Pointless song structures in an attempt to "feel" epic and progressive, but there's nothing progressive about them. They just change time signatures on a whim now and then. This is more like pop metal with a keyboard and an annoying vocalist. That's just me though.

My favorite Dream Theater album. Not a single bad song (even though Voices and Lifting Shadows can be a little meh).

Everything they did prior to Metropolis Part 2 is really great. Everything afterwards can range from ok to boring as fuck.

^ Yeah it's very generic. I think after ToT they started losing the plot. The lowest points are probably the last 2 albums.

nah, Black Clouds was good but ADTOE was just boring. The songs aren't bad, but they are just... there; nothing special. I can even enjoy Systematic Chaos more than ADTOE (even though i consider that one to be the worst DT album).

BCSL actually bored me, and the production was pretty dull. I didn't mind SC, though I don't really find myself going back to it very often, In the presence's opening 2 minutes are crazy. ADTOE has some really good moments but a lot of meh ones yeah.

I found everything to be too loud in BCSL, but it worked in songs like A Nightmare To Remember and The shattered fortress. Don't know, it gave it that "something".

Listening to The Mirror atm. The heavyness feels way more natural in that song than in the whole TOT album (which was good but kind of felt forced)

BCSL had the guitar and drums up too loud (as do most of the self produced records), the bass was low and muffled. The keyboards are usually ridiculously low in the mix and it was business as usual. I don't know, that album just wasn't memorable. It had good bits but it was the first DT album I had a hard time getting through .

ToT was the first DT album I heard and I was into death metal and black metal at the time so the transition was easy and I loved the album.
