The fact that you wrote that this band -"knew to avoid the extended song lengths and meandering structures associated with Opeth and instead chose to stick to creating epic tracks that are also compact and instant" - makes me want to give you a good smack in the head. There is nothing wrong with the structures or long song lengths in any of Opeth's songs. If your a musician, it is easy to comprehend and enjoy the long song structures (i.e the ending of Deliverance or A Fair Judgement (which by the way has some of the most hanutingly beautiful guitar passages I've ever heard).

Still, a good review and I will be downloading this tonight.

An excellent album, I would say. Sometimes a bit too similiar to Amorphis, but with more balls. Barren Earth was also very solid live, much better than Amorphis when I saw them a year ago, may I add.

Heard "The Ritual of Dawn" on last.fm radio a few months and decided to give the full album shot. Caught between a 3.5 and a 4.

Forgot about this album, but then came back to it when I was compiling my top 25 of the year. Really good stuff.

Silent Waters is definitely not a 5.

"Forlorn Waves" rules.

I love Silent Waters but all of their other albums aren't too special besides a handful of songs. This is like a better version of old Amorphis imo.

In hindsight, I'm pretty sure that I overrated this in the review.
