i personally think this is a fantastic review. You capture my thoughts on the subject exactly. Aside from 'god save..' and 'pretty vacant' i dont rate these chugging punks at all.
the fact that this guy has a Minutemen avatar only further validates his excellent opinions

alright it's not something i would listen to, but i don't think you're allowing for how dangerous this album was (in the uk anyway).
imagine a no 1 single (which they had to ban) and no 1 album where the singer sneers "god save the queen and her fascist regime" or "i am an anti-christ, i am an anarchist, i don't know what i want but i know how to get it: i want to destroy".
nearly caused a meltdown in society and that's why it's a classic.

yeah cause of some poorly written faux-rebellion mock bullshit the whole band took part in.

im blushing
in retrospect i realise i sounded like a bit of a pompous ass. it's just there are so many better, more powerful punk bands aout there (stiff little fingers for example). add that to the fact that it just sounds weak compared to other records of the time. you want danger, try black flag.

"yeah cause of some poorly written faux-rebellion mock bullshit the whole band took part in"
this was a time when the UK was deep in recession, the 3 day working week due to the oil crisis, record inflation etc. and it was ruled by an unelected elite (House of Lords) including the queen who was the richest woman in the world and didn't pay tax.
it's a political record.
"if you want danger, try crass"
the danger came from them being no 1.
"it's just there are so many better, more powerful punk bands out there (stiff little fingers for example)"
they couldn't even write their own lyrics.

i understand your point and the impact that the sex pistols had on britain
i just think there are waaaaaay better punk bands out there
and crass was much more dangerous than the sex pistols ever could have been

maybe, but crass were more of an underground movement weren't they, whereas the sex pistols really shook up the world (or the UK) for a moment there.

crass started as an underground movement, but the content of the first track on their debut album (Reality Asylum) was so shocking that the pressing plant refused to press it (Crass replaced it with silence and renamed it The Sound of Free Speech)
they ended up getting so big that they got the attention of members of parliament. the british government attempted to destroy them - and eventually successfully did, as Crass dissolved in 1984.

Sex Pistols are overrated as hell, but WhereIsMyMind is a complete douche. Props to illmitch for referencing Crass, much better band.

'stiff little fingers couldnt even write their own lyics'
well, gordon oglive was technically a member of the band. also, the sex never wrote a song as powerful, literate or musically great as alternative ulster. no way ;)
