Sky Moves Sideways starts off well but it drags after a while. Stupid Dream, Lightbulb Sun and In Absentia are the best PT albums, the band just doesn't do metal as well as they do prog rock.

hmm, it seems it's of the popular/cool opinion that in absentia somehow isn't their best work on this site... odd...
I mean, Deadwing is cool, FoaBP is okay, but both are completely destroyed by IA. Lyrically, conceptually, musically, IA is just completely perfect; "Blackest Eyes" alone is easily one of the best songs of the century.
Pre-IA had some nice stuff as well, especially Sky Moves Sideways (a near classic for me) and Lightbulb Sun (x2 especiallys for "Russia On Ice"). Otherwise though, I really just don't get the love for FoaBP. It really is sad that its B SIDES (Nil Recurring) are better than the record, lol.

Yeah sometimes it bewilders me how people can prefer Deadwing of FoaBP to In Absentia.

Yeah tbh I enjoyed Nil Recurring more than FOABP too. Just marginally, however. This and FOABP are about equal for me.

I could never get in to Stupid Dream. I find Piano Lessons and Don't Hate Me to be downright irritating songs. Even Less is fantastic, and several other songs are great live, but I never felt good about the record itself...and because I should relate this to the actual thread........The Incident!

Signify, FoaBP, In Absentia, Deadwing and this are their best albums imo.
and to reiterate, the album is insane.

I've only heard FOABP haha so I'm biased

I've only picked The Incident up just yesterday, but I think I've isolated my underlying 'irk' or 'malcontent' to be a problem of continuity. Each song/movement is good and really do set themselves apart from others, but their presentations alongside subsequent songs just kind of awkwardly "drop into place." Being a thematic song cycle, I see more room for 'filler content' to help transitions. Maybe with enough buffer zone, each movement would stand alone more firmly and do themselves more justice.
But hey, one shouldn't analyze a good thing too deeply, lest I forget it's still a good thing. I may end up enjoying this more than Fear of a Blank Planet. Signify, though, I'll shamelessly admit to being my mainstay favorite and doubt that'll change.

I agree, third best. In Absentia and FOABP are both better, IMO. Although I can see this overtaking FOABP with time.

Eh, I think of all PT as summer music. And Deadwing's easily my least favorite of the ones that I own.
