Avant-garde is always meant to be different and original. It is damn obvious Floyd was. But it became popular and revolutionary in music, so many other bands did the same. So it was no longer unique, but a father. The timing for the album simply could not be any better. Just because something does very well, does not mean that it cannot have avant-garde qualities. Do you see what I'm getting at?

I really don't see where you're getting at because Pink Floyd at the time of the release of this album were extremely different from other bands of their time (Moody Blues, Yes, Genesis, etc.). In fact if anything, at this point they were MORE accessible than their contemporaries. Also the act of revolutionary styles in music being co-opted is nothing new so I don't understand why you are pointing it out, unless you're trying to say that its a bad thing.

Of course something can do well, but if it sells well it is often because it is no longer avant-garde; its far easier for an artist to make concede to the passive majority than for the passive majority to concede to an artist. Pink Floyd by this time were far out of their avant-garde style and into more accessible pop formulas. That's why it did so well.

Oh and FYI, Melina and Beck were extremely popular, which is why there was a revolution in the first place.

Never heard of them, and I know plenty of people who would say the same. They would thus only be popular within avant-garde circles, unlike Pink Floyd, who were extremely popular in mass society and most likely reviled by the avant-garde community.

oh, and an example of actual avant-garde music that everyone has heard: "hoedown" - Aaron Copland.

Again, never heard it. And if everyone heard it than it most likely wouldn't be avant-garde as avant-garde artists prefer to avoid mediums that provide large access and consumption.

The clocks were used as basic irritant noise at the beginning of the song. I guarantee that you can find other avant-garde songs just like it. When a song uses an effect, it would use it to go with the meledy for a second, then it is gone.

True, but what I'm trying to say is that sound effects are used constantly in pop songs, its not exclusive to avant-garde music. "Bicycle Race" by Queen utilizes the same effect in breaking up the melody and its catchy as hell.

The closest thing to the way Floyd used it was the ring of a guitar or other actual instruments. A clock is not an instrument but a household item. Often the idea is used in AG. If I bang pans together to the wailing of a guitar, it is rock, but eliminate the guitar and you have AG. Thats why I used the term "aspects" earlier.

Using household items istn' solely avant-garde at all. In fact this can be said for about ALL styles of music. Especially in American music, household items have been substituted for instruments for hundreds of years, dating back to slavery. Turntables for example were originally a "non-musical instrument".

The discussion about Avant-garde is now going way off topic so let me go back to my original point: Somethign being "Avant-garde" must consitute being appreciated by a minority. Minority groups in society by common definition have more distinct tastes. Majority groups (ie. the rest) tend to be more passive and blatant. These qualities are neither purely good nor bad.

Also, creativity does not equal avant-garde because creativity can be created and appreciated by the majority as well. Obviously, because DSOTM has found lots of popularity with the passive majority labelling them Avant-garde is contradictory.

Awesome review, said for the seventieth time months after the fact.

Mill is much more overrated than this album, though :p Rhetorical articulation and regurgitation of others' thoughts.

He is rather overrated. :-/ After the first 80 pages or so he really starts running short different ways of listing things that are great about freedom.

Never really been a fan of Floyd. I think their a bit overrated. My friend sums them up perfectly:

'When they stop p***ing around with aeroplane noises and actually make some music, its quite good'

Stereo-typical as it seems, this is the only Pink Floyd album I could (sort of) get into. "Time" and "Money" are nice, but my favorite is "Eclipse". Yeah. The rest I find boring. This Message Edited On 04.27.06

'Time' without a doubt is the best song on here. The chiming clocks, the Gilmour/Wright dual harmonized vocals, Gilmour's guitar solo...This song, and album, are both classics. I also love 'Money', very addictive to listen to and play on bass.

This album stayed in the charts for over 740 weeks and one factory in Germany pressed nothing but this for over 6 months.

I honestly don't think they're overrated at all. Simply marvelous music by exceptionally talented song-writers. Or would that be music-makers?

This isn't my favourite album by them, but there's something really special about it. I don't know what it is, but it's just an incredibly interesting record.

I have a very old compact disc of this. On mine it says Breathe In The Air instead of just Breath

I might just listen to this tonight. Good night time record.

To my knowledge the best selling album of all time is Thriller, by Micheal Jackson.
