And the "Nick Greer thing to do" would be writing a well-versed, usually long review examining musical nuances and theory rather than giving play-by-plays of a record. That being said, it's a stereotype and not a typecast.

My biggest gripe with the record is the predictability with the song structures. Pretty much every song is verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus/outro, which is pretty un-Thrice. Then again, the band clearly said this would be a stripped-down affair, pretty much the opposite of TAI, which it succeeds in, but at the expense of the typically interesting fare Thrice seems to toss off without a thought.

I think at first, I would have agreed with all of this, but after I realized that Beggars wasn't supposed to be the integration of all their experimentation on The Alchemy Index into one cohesive album, I gave up that hope and appreciated the album for what it is. I'm waiting for their magnum opus as well, but this still has its merit. Thus the slightly higher rating from me.
