I thought that in hip-hop real instruments are used and in rap all beats are just made from computers and whatnot

@ Kane

naah man hip hop is almost 100% about the lyrics. There are only stellar beats and some violin/piano sounds in the background. hip-hop is much more energetic and the lyrical themes are much happier (in lack of a better word). Also the instrumental part of hip-hop is much varied and much more full/stuffed if you know what I mean

I used to work at a bowling alley where 95% of the people were black and the older people would listen to R & B while the younger crowd were bumpin' their rap sh*t

1..2..3 I love how we're all having multiple conversations in which none of them involve Anaal Nathrakh.

naah man rap and hip hop have got plenty of differences.

1) the lyrical content

2) hip-hop is much more of a dance/party music than rap is (which is about lyrical depth)

3) hip hop has a more stuffed, instrumental sound than rap does, featuring many different effects and instruments

4) rap (mostly) has good points and even morals, hip hop doesn't

but no, it is not, I have learned it myself during the years. A bunch of my friends listen to hip hop and some listen to rap so I have learned, during the years, the difference between those two.

Hip Hop is to Rap, as Body is to Arm. Point: Rap is a part of Hip Hop.

Hip Hop is a culture (really, by definition) and rap is music. There cannot be a distinction created between Hip Hop Music and rap because rap IS Hip Hop Music. Party rap (out of refusal to say, commercial, because that criticism is silly), Gangsta rap, neo soul rap are ALL different forms of rap, thus different forms of hip hop music. So yes, Nelly, Lil Jon, etc. are making Hip Hop music, just as much as Rakim and Eric B, Krs-One, and others did (by no means am I drawing a comparison. I am merely stressing that they all make hip hop music).

Basically this is the truth. So to say rap isn't hip hop would be wrong.

I stand my ground, even after that statement you made, there are sufficient differences between rap and hip-hop which cannot be denied

no, you can say that rap is closely affiliated with hip-hop, but to say that rap IS hip-hop is just wrong

okay but it isn't wrong because rap is hip-hop but this conversation really isn't gonna go anywhere unless kingsoby1, scyther, dfelon or bastard happen to join in
