I wouldn't really say early Tool sounds like Helmet tbh. I mean yeah, Drop-D riffs, yadda yadda yadda. But Tool were always on the more reflective and contemplative side of the alt-metal sound (you can decide how well they did with that style), whereas Helmet took much more influence from the post-hardcore and noise rock scenes of the time... not to mention groove metal as well

If we're talking about bands who were similar to Helmet back then, I think Quicksand and Rollins Band are much better comparison points, especially in that "post-hardcore meets alternative metal" sense
