Yeah the main riff in Coast is so Adam Jones.. sigh.
Coast really is one of the more blatantly Tool-sounding tracks on here.
And yes, i DO agree that it is some of his best material to date. Or at least, based on what i've heard from him it is. Largely due to the absence of that gimmicky wall-of-sound production. I still stand by the fact that i feel this is too similar to other prog acts that i would much rather listen to, and while the guy has never impressed me, i cannot deny that it is a solid release.

I am truly in love with his album.

This is definitely growing on me. Still keeping it at a 3.5 for the time being but i wouldn't be surprised if i bumped this up to a 4 somewhere down the line.
I still hear plenty of similarities to other better artists here, and the 2nd half of this album is definitely weaker than the 1st, but the high points on here are so good.
Also, question: What other album(s) in his discography is/are the closest to this in terms of sound?

I've heard various songs off it. Seventh Wave (i think that's what it's called) is pretty good. I listened to Bastard for the first time last week. 1st half of the song was great, loved that riff. 2nd half i found boring. Heard another song off of it that was really synthy (can't remember the name) that i wasn't really a fan of.

listen to ocean machine about 3-4 times and i guarantee you'll fall in love with it. After the 3rd listen i was blown away. Need to listen to this still.

How does the rest of the album compare to the second half of "Ki"? That may be one of the best things I've ever heard.

That second half of the title track is obviously the album's climax. In that way you can't really compare. Let's just say that, yes, it is the most bombastic section of the album. But there are other sections like that to be found on the album. Some subtle and others more obvious. The rest of the album is up to par because it's also consistent and quite diverse while maintaining a signature sound.

"Coast" and "Ki" are a couple of my favorites right now. I have only listened to this album twice so it's subject to change in the future.
Cool album.

Album Rating: 5.0 | Sound Off
I still cant believe Ki is rated lowest from all 4 albums. This CD is soaked full of a totally unique creativity, I still find it hard to compare to other efforts, its just too different. I really wonder how some people can compare this to tool, Adam Jones plays hard or soft, the "duality" devin archives on coast, disruptr and gato (closely inbetween heavy and mellow). Dont get me wrong, i love tool, but this record moves in diferent spheres

It may be the most overlooked album of the DTP series, but even 'Ki' has some brilliant moments, in the form particularly of 'Disruptr', 'Heaven Send' and the ever so tense title track.
