I like this album. To me, it seems to possess a heavy quality, while being easy to digest. There are less jazzy odysseys on this album than focus, but they both have a really cool formula that you don't see in contemporary music anymore, especially in mainstream music (Nickelback anyone)? I really enjoy the lyrics on Traced, it enhances the melody :-)

Austrian Death Machine isn't brilliant by any stretch of the imagination, but it's a fun record and good for what it is. I get no enjoyment out of this album, and stand by my ratings.

Uswerword: You are a complete tool and are judging my review because you disagree. Amazing albums: Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumors', The Beatles 'Revolver', X-Japan's 'Art of Life'... eat shit!

Thank you, I still maintain my current stance on this album.

This is not a record you will walk away from feeling any different about life
For me, it definitely did.
From the sections of your review I skimmed over, it wasn't that bad. As others have mentioned, I've seen reviews much worse than this. Just keep practicing at it. Unfortunately, I cannot agree with your score.

ninjuice: Colors is a far more polished, consistent, tasteful way to shred than Fortress on any level.
Not really but ok...
BTBAM shows a distinct maturity in their songwriting that PTH doesn't have yet (only their 2nd record)
Just because you can put accordions in a metal song and make it work doesn't mean the songwriting is better. And Fortress is their third record you dolt.
and can keep it up for most, if not all, of a record whereas Fortress was completely front-loaded with the best tracks while the last half or so completely blended or was utterly forgettable.
Partially right, except that half the songs on Colors are three minutes too long, and the band think they have the songwriting capabilities of say, an Opeth when they don't. Not to mention the vocalist can't scream or sing very well.

I have a feeling most of the negs here are simply due to difference in musical taste. It wasn't a great review, but I've seen far worse (FAR worse) get zero negs on this site. I for one have no idea why this album is regarded so highly. There were excellent elements within it, but overall it was just a forgettable album. Played it many times over the period of a few weeks to try and understand the hype. Also, I'd hardly call this prog stuff "death metal." He manages a weak scream occasionally an the music is too heavily influenced by other genres to really fairly call it death metal at all.

I think we should hijack this thread by talking about how great the album is. I'm loving this atm. So far, my favorite track is probably "The Unknown Guest". The new vocal style is much more desirable over Focus, too.
