It would've been great if you submitted this yesterday instead of a month ago.

What can I say, I was ahead of my time.

Yes the music is technical and well thought out, but it has no soul. The very emotional life blood that connects music to people has been cut out, resulting in a solemn mechanical sensation, that proves once again that technicality is no substitute for substance.

Exactly how I feel. I'm really dumbfounded by my inability to give this a proper rating.

I just found it insulting to rate this thing a 2.5 for lack of emotion.

to say a lack of emotional depth I think is just looking for something.

Give me an example of music with all of this 'emotion' you speak of if you want to truly back your claim.

This is all subjective anyway

Yup.

The fact that the reviewer has AFI, Breaking Benjamin, and Papa Roach at the top of his most played lists says all that needs to be said.

How about we get some people that are actually experienced in the genre of melodic metal to do these reviews. LOL

Um, this reviewer has quite a few metal albums rated, and in any case, his album ratings play absolutely no part in his opinion of this album. He wrote a fantastic review for why he didn't like the album, and it wasn't because he didn't know anything about metal, because he most obviously does. Perhaps you should get your head around this whole 'subjectivity' thing that you're trying to preach.

Are you saying to me this marvel of tech death work is not greater then those previously mentioned?.

This is all subjective anyway.

Like I said, his other ratings bear no relevance. I'd like to see you write a review to this calibre. Also, lol at you thinking this is a 'marvel of tech death'.

I can't believe people still refer to this as any sort of death metal.

Well, seeing as you seem to know absolutely everything about Cynic, reviewing, and music in general, one would expect you to have noticed that there isn't a whole lot of death metal on the album. Just sayin'.

Give me an example of music with all of this 'emotion' you speak of if you want to truly back your claim. If you can't I'm calling bs.

I can think of hundreds of albums that show more emotion than this and still keep a great quality of music. However I will keep it to this genre (which I would call progressive metal) in order to answer you.

Firstly we have the mighty Opeth. Blackwater Park and Still Life show amazing amounts of emotion, be it in the softer vocals (which by the way are better than the vocoded ones featured here) or the angered growls (again also better). The concept behind Still Life was executed to near perfection, showcasing the extraordinary highs and lows of the main character whilst keeping the length down and the package tight.

Next I will turn my attentions to the band Dream Theater. Albums such as Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Images and Words and Scenes From A Memory also showcase a high amount of emotional grip whilst maintaining a high musical standard. LaBries vocals are subtle in places and monotonous in others, yet despite being the weakest part of the music he can still pull of deeply emotional passages such as in "The Spirit Carries On" on Scenes From A Memory and "The Glass Prison" on Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.

Other bands in the genre that I like include Mastodon, Firewind (maybe not progressive metal?) and Queensryche, all of whom have albums containing more diversity and more emotive passages than this and still keep a high amount of technicality to their music.

Of course as you and rasputin stated, and I said in the review, it is all subjective anyway. In your mind this is a 5 and I'm fine with that, but to me this is an average album that deserves an average (not bad) rating.

yeah Firewind definitely aren't prog metal.

And Mutatedfreek, while you have used 2 excellent examples of emotionally charged metal, I really can't see how you don't like this if you are into 'peth and 'theater. This Message Edited On 02.01.09
