musicforlife...the guitar work beats out any of the other albums...and the drum work is still insane. the singing just kills me which is why i like the old albums. i agree with risket...i hope the come back with some screaming and energy atleast.

My question is why do you think they sold out? Going in a different direction musically doesn't mean they are sell outs, when you sell out you play music for someone else, you don't write the songs you wanna write, Avenged Sevenfold wrote the kinda music they wanted, not what other people wanted.

This is a great album for musicians...nevermind the singing crap...pretty much all the lyrics for I think are a waste when it should just be instrumental just for musicians to learn from, when you play these guys on the guitar you kinda hear Dimebag in it (sort of) only slower. But they do play fast, it was "Bat Country" that got me into these guys....and now i'm hooked :D:D

Apparently being popular means that one has 'sold out'.

Drunken Viking;

You couldn't have said it better.
This album is great, but it didn't really keep my attention. I haven't heard their other albums, but I hope they're better. It seems like all the vocal lines on this album are the same.
The drums are great.
The guitar is entertaining, but the solos don't blend with the music very well like metallica and Led zepplin do.

Thanks to the guys above, the word sold out is thrown around to much.
The previous album was considered by many a thousand times better, it's got very different vocals and the solos blend better, but there are less of them, and still great drumming from The Rev.

Why does everyone think they sold out. Ill bet if A7X released City of Evil as their first album, and there was no WTF or STST, more people would like this album because they wouldnt have anything to compare it to. In itself, this is a great album, and thats how I judge it.

A lot of people like the album, but most think that's it's nowhere near as good as WTF.

Finally a band that realizes this hardcore/metalcore fad is rediculous. This album is one of the best rock/metal albums this year. I've heard many people complain about the vocals on the album, which compared to most of the shit that those same people listen to, are great. He doesn't have an amazing voice but he has what he needs to suit their music.

RE the whole "selling out" argument: they didn't, plain and simple. They didn't simplify the music, the riffs and solos are even more complex than before, the song structure is far from normal, and almost every song is over 5 minutes long. I don't think they'd be writing an album where the songs average 7 minutes long if they were sellouts. They're still doing what they've always done, albeit with a slightly altered sound, it just happened to catch on this time. Big time. Hell, it didn't even get really popular until nearly six months after it was released. You'd think that if A7x sold out, they would've been shoving City of Evil down the mainstream's throat from day one.
Now that that's out of the way, I think City of Evil is really, really good. Everything through Seize the Day is incredible, but everything from Sidewinder through Betrayed sort of bore me. MIA is amazing though, easily amongst my favorite A7x songs, and possibly one of my favorite songs ever, period. That said, I still think Waking the Fallen was better overall.This Message Edited On 04.02.06
