i agree with damrod in that Underoath is nowhere near what anyone with any knowledge of musical genres would consider hardcore/screamo/emo. However, with the amount of screaming they do have, it is impressive for them to have garnered the success and popularity they have gained. Most people I show this band to are put off simply because of what screaming they do have in their songs. So I think it unfair to label them a sell out or "popcore", which to me brings to mind an image of britney spears growling "hit me baby one more time", which actually would be quite an amusing event in itself. I just get sick of the genre arguments. Some people consider groups like Underoath and Emery to be emo. People tell me they're not, and list bands that ARE emo, which I listen to, and if anything, these bands sound almost MORE poppy than alot of underoath and Emery songs. But its just the background I've had, apparently, because I read up on all these genres and still cant figure out why certain bands are considered hardcore or emo and other similar sounding bands aren't. Not trying to accuse anyone of anything, it's just that sometimes it seems like the "knowledgeable" people on here are more content to keep being more knowledgeable than everyone else and when people try and figure out what they're talking about, they're ridiculed. So I'm going to ask, not out of spite, but out of mere curiousity, what differentiates true emo bands from the similar styles of many of today's emo bands? I think I've got a grasp of hardcore, and turns out its not much like what anyone thinks it is nowadays.

Anyways, I enjoy this CD tremendously, but like you said, an opinion is an opinion, and mine is not worth any more than yours, and neither is musicman8's. In fact, when it comes to genres and the technical side of music, I'd daresay you appear to know alot more than I do, so maybe my opinion is therefore trash. I still like this band, and their new CD is amazing. Very much different from this CD.

Now im not going to pretend i know as much about emo as some of the other guys here, but i can give you my general idea

Many bands that are called emo today arent really emo. They have emotional subjects in theirs songs, but that doesnt make them emo

and thats all i can say without starting some form of argument or someting
Might i recommend u reading the emo muses, itd be far easier to read them and make your own views

and that came out sounding ruder tha i meant it to

ddnyy, i have a similar dilema. i cant figure out what emo is or isn't because of all the genre arguements on this site. even in my first review, i thought had a grasp on emo, but then i got like 15 comments about how The Black Maria isnt emo (just go look at it) so, because of all the debate, my view of emo is seriously warped. anyway, i do agree, i love this album, and i am seriously looking forward to the next one.

and etan A7X, was that necessary?

yay for ddnyy11188! he has a pic of strongbad, strongbad rules, so does trogdor, but ya i like the changing of times way better, but dude darkheart, there are soooo many bands that are way better than underoath like demon hunter, zao, becoming the archetype, still remains, august burns red, thousand foot krutch, and alot more, and they are not posers, but i do agree all of the huge popular bands these days are posers, like green day for example, i dont get it... if they hate America so much then.. do us a favor and move to france you stupid anti-American bastards!, i hate how they could care less about the soldiers because the soldiers and are putting their asses on the line for our freedom, and then theres all of these little green day minnions who think the same thing just because "well, green day does, and uh they are popular so i guess il agree with them"... dumbassas! that just pisses me off but anyways il get back on topic, i like underoath alot too i just dont think that they are the best, im wearing an underoah shirt right now actually, haha

i'm no underoath fanboy, but this review is just plain sucky. first of all, underoath sounds nothing like hawthorne heights. and even if it was a little similar, the fact is that hawthorne heights has no where near the amount of musical prowess that underoath has. I can see the comparison to the used, but again, i disagree with it. i dont think this music sounds like the used or hawthorne heights. its definitely not the best cd out there, but its original, and there is little fault with it. the only thing is that the guitar kind of wears on my nerves after more than half an hour of play.

If my review was so sucky, and my opinion so "wrong" for you, I wonder why you voted it as considerably low as you did

The author of this album review is ignorant, and judging from the comparisons made in the article, is prbably a 15 year old girl who shops at Hot Topic.

Underoath sounds nothing like the used or hawthorne heights.

By the way, since when did catchiness become a criterion for bad music? It's as if people will only write good reviews for bands whose music is hyper robust and unpalletable. Whew! Just had to get that off my chest.

When you start name-calling, you automatically fail to arouse any sort of argument that would take you seriously, which I'm not.

UnderOATH doesn't sound like The Used or Hawthorne Heights. 'They're Only Chasing Safety' does. And catchiness is not a "criterion" for bad music. Take a look at The Format. It's unabashedly catchy, and damn good for it. But this is not good. It's stated quite matter-of-factly in the review why it's not by any means as great as what other people say. You may not agree with it, but it's well written, and if you say otherwise it's only because you don't agree with it. That, in and of itself, is idiotic.
