gah the thing I dont like about these guys is that they're guitars sound like machinery trying to cut wood...

I was pleasantly surprised by this album...I really like the more melodic direction the band took.

What!? That is one of the best things about them; Meshuggah has a crushing tone.

Only listened to Bleed, but it's amazing

i agree with the tone thing, it is actually destructive. in the best sense!
this album has grown on me... and it's only the second listen!
loving the slow grooves and clean bits in Lethargica.
and Bleed, its really interesting how it is a fast song with a slow pace, if you get what i mean!

I really wish they switched the vocals up once in a while. They get a little to monotone for my liking.

Jen can basically only sing that way. Case in point: Ritual.

Great album.
Does anyone else feel that the songs Fred wrote stand out most on this album? He wrote 4 songs: Combustion, Bleed, Pineal Gland Optics, and Dancers to a Discordant System (the first, third, third to last, and last songs. I'm not sure if that placement is significant in any way, but he also wrote the two longest songs and the shortest song, as well as, in my opinion, the three best and the single worst song (Combustion) on the album.) All 4 songs are completely different from one another.
On the other hand, Hagstrom's songs are more similar to one another. The standout for me of his batch is Lethargica, but that song demonstrates the element that makes his pieces so similar to each other (chugging on the Locrian tritone, which is rather badass IMO). Electric Red owns as well (he wrote that song and This Spiteful Snake with Haake).
Overall, it's really good. I find myself wishing they had pushed themselves in a different direction more - that they had done more ambient stuff, perhaps, or anything unexpected. The most surprising thing on the album was the impossible bass pedal parts in Bleed.

this is great but it's also kinda annoying after a few songs. the drumming is sick of course though
