and they blast (beat) too much.
Try and look at the blast beats as more of a hypnotic function rather than as the rhythm section, if that makes sense. Album is so close to a 5!

I still have yet to listen to this but since I have listened to Watershed, Choirs of the Eye, and April these past few days, I think I finally can.

I could maybe see that if the snare wasn't mixed so loud. Those two things together is what screws it up for me. If they either didn't blast as much, or it wasn't as loud, I wouldn't mind. But 4 minutes of loud blasting just annoys me lol.
don't get me wrong though, I've heard blast beats used much more poorly than here. This Message Edited On 07.28.08

Yeah, black metal is hard, it's one of the last sub-genre's I got into and I'm still cautious about it.

Just start off with the more mainstream black metal bands like Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, and Graveworm. The rest will be easier to listen to after you hear those bands. Thats how it was for me.

No problem. We love to discuss despite repetition with conversations.

Why did you recommend him the 3 worst bands in the genre?

^^ agree although old Graveworm > both. Dissection- Storm Of The Lights Bane is one of the most catchy and meorable black metal albums you'll ever hear so get that. Also get some Kataxu, Bergtatt from Ulver, and Forest Silence and you'll be good to go.

I recommended those bands because they are the easiest to listen to. Once you get past those you can listen to more of the stuff with bad production.

Balls, you always talk about Katatonia right? Well I heard something on their myspace that I liked, but I tried to Viva Emptiness, and I couldn't get through the third song.

Dimmu Borgir and most Cradle i've heard sucks balls, avoid them tbh. Black metal isn't supposed to be commercial but yeah spinlight, Katatonia is ace. The Great Cold Distance for their new stuff and Brave Murder Day for their heavy stuff with Akerfeldt.

Hey I was just trying to help him out, but for classic black metal albums get Nattens Madrigal, Transilvanian Hunger, Pure Holocaust, In the Nightside Eclipse, and The Somberlain.

^^ I know man, my bad If I came off as a dick. But for Emperor i'd go with Anthems. I find it a whole lot better than Nightside. Bergtatt though I think spinlight could get into. A lot of clean vocals, catchy riffs, etc and the production is bearable for new guys. Nattens might have to wait a bit. We should stop spamming this review and take it to somebody's journal.
