we are not screamo, emo, post punk, progressive-y, math rock, or any of the like. our songs are best summed up by live performance, and if not then by a recording. but i dont think anyone in the band thinks that we try to stay within any genre confines and as a result we dont really need to be put up against othef bands who's music has common themes.

project pat/3-6 mafia/slim thug/chamillionaire/boys II men all have 1000x as much influence on the drum parts i write then any other emo/screamo/punk band.

It's interesting that you say this. Almost any musician hates to be put in a box because they feel they get confined in a certain genre they do not necessarily feel connected to because of the reasons you mentioned. That said, for a music critic genres obviously do have a function. By using these genres you can connect certain bands with a similar sound, which, in turn is helpful to people looking for those bands, regardless of what different influences they might have. What I find interesting about it is that musicians (and I'm not specifically targeting you) don't really seem to think from that perspective. What are your thoughts on that?

abaddon,
i know exactly the contradiction you are talking about. Part of my understanding comes from way too many psychedelics and a 10 day silent meditation retreat. The thing is is that with music, for the most part artists write albums and songs trying to communicate in a way that the written or spoken word fails. All the words we use are expressed in hopes that the meaning is not lost in the exchange. The subjective dictionary/vocabularies we all use to navigate our world often fail to line up with eachothers and messages are lost or misinterpreted as a result of the beautiful intricacies of spoken and written language. Now its true that we dont all hear music the same, but there are certain laws of music theory that attempt...

To prove a certain universality in the structure of music that relates to thegeometrc structural patterning of the entire world. The coolest thing i ever read was handed to me by a friend i hadjistgiven acid to in this little town in upstate NY. He had gone accross the street andout ofnowhere discovered a collection of history of pythagerous. He made me read a chapter about the music of the spheres. About endless symphonies within symphonies. I really reccomend the book, but here is the point. Symbolic and written language create abstraction, its the flaw of language that creates every bit of our suffering. Music, the ordering of vibrations into geometric patterns defies abstraction to some extent...

Its a manner of expressing emotion, a set of vibrational/memorybased patterns themselves, with minimal abstraction. Meaning is less lost when communicated through these patterns of symmetry and harmony. You can get to someone heart by singing a love song more easily than reading the lyrics as a poem. The voice itself vibrates in may of these frequencies, but reviews on type dont always...

my fav review we have gotten is on our myspace. I translated it from French with a computer. Bands are not really mentioned, but the review becomes a piece of art itself. That's why there are adjectives and such. Comparing bands is valid when a band has done nothing innovative and is easily exposed for what they rip off. But genres are stupid because they turn off unstipulated listeners before they give bands a chance. Be more creative, comparing is...

Just like saying good bad better worse. They are fucking different, each have their own story and when you use a general set of instruments notes strings, there are bound to be similarities it doesnt constitute a genre. Bands know we work from the same toolbox and that why we get over similarities and look for the defining differences. Word.

the whole point being that i took the time to write this just as you took the time to record an album. we both have our own personal influences and we both have our own personal ways of doing things. the difference is distinguished in my opinion, but to be honest this record isn't anything excitingly new. its a post hardcore / emo / screamo affair and thus i drew connections to that scene.

i'm sure getting compared to other bands probably lightens the deep feelings you harbor towards this record since it is your own recording. but none of it is meant to bring the album down, it is just a simple way to explain how the album works. maybe you've gotten the impression that the only reason it is written this way is to expose my intense knowledge of a scene and i could definitely come off that way. but it is not intentional.. i love music like this and it is my favorite thing to find great new releases like "jokes". Buster, I understand what you're saying. I had this discussion awhile ago with a friend who is a visual artist about how art is open communication in that people can take what they want from it, but the messenger is still expressing what he wants to say.

The post I made earlier was pretty much about the argument just now. You are an artist and therefore think from that perspective, Pixies is a reviewer and thus thinks from that perspective. What I'm saying was that that is what it's all about. when Pixies is saying this is is a post-hardcore/emo record he's not saying; ''this fits in this box, and that's that''. He's saying ''this band is sporting this type of sound, so if you are into these and these bands check it out''. Yes, all these bands have their differences and details that they differ in, but the point in focusing on similarities is to expose people to your music.

Which takes me back to the fact that it's about perspective, a lot of artists don't seem to think of it from the critic's point of view. Thanks for the feedback. This Message Edited On 10.13.07

half way through I started writing more in response to a post from a different board, so maybe I came off wrong. You did a fantastic job writing the review. The description was right on point. Its thorough and reflects that you are stipulated to other bands with similar style. In no way was I saying anything about the review. I dont have time to argue and disagree with a review. I spent 5 hours answering dfelon's interview this morning. Check it out. We really appreciate the support.
