This is def one of those albums where a few songs grab you immediately but the rest take their time to really grow on you. I still hold there’s a little bit of filler here, but even the weaker material is really good or at least serves enough of a purpose in the album.

Yeah, this was weirdly instantaneous for me, but it was all circumstance. I can see how some of these tracks would bore for some, I can’t think of any here that I would wanna drop though

Well, "Everyday" isn't much of a "song" but it's an effective moodsetter. "The Crying of Lot G" kinda drags and lacks melody a bit, it's pleasant but probably my least favorite. "From Black to Blue" and "Madeline" I found weak at first though I love the psych guitar on the former and the melody on the latter is one of the album's best. "Tired Hippo" on paper is filler, a relatively uninteresting instrumental 5-min mood piece on an already rather long album, but I think it does a great job of setting the stage for "Night Falls On Hoboken". I would say that a lot of the songs here are perhaps just a bit too long on average but overall for such a long album this is extremely well paced - better so than ICHTHBAO, imo.

Aw everyday is one of my favs on here, such an absolutely gorgeous atmosphere & I adore the lyrics on crying of lot g. The other 3 you mention are my least favourites on here too though

I really don't like "Tears Are In Your Eyes." Sounds like something I'd hear in a commercial about starving children.

I kinda feel like they’re just goofing around with effects on that one. Doesn’t really work as a song imo but I can see it being appealing as an atmosphere piece.

One of the issues I kind of have with this band overall is that for every amazing tune they have there's another one that's just ok. And granted the ok ones are usually good enough to warrant an occasional spin, one wonders if their albums wouldn't improve with some editing (I think this is the reason Painful is my favorite since it's (almost) all killer no filler).

Haha, true enough. Yo La Tengo has always tended to have great and atmospheric album covers.
