everything about this gets me going. its almost all i think about every day! ive listened to sure and certain like 1,000 times already and even if the album sucks im so glad we got that song. but i dont think the album will suck. the only thing is that, for me, they were on a real losing streak with chase and invented, that im worried damage might have been a fluke that happened to hit at the right time with the right subject matter, and maybe theyre still in a dip in their career. then i listen to sure and certain and i get happy again. also, although i flat-out dont like chase or invented, they at least had many elements to them that were creative. they just need to line up all those elements in the right direction, which we know theyre capable of doing, so. but yeah the descriptions have me hyped. i like the live version of the new title track, not so much lyrically but its clearly a song that shows off his vocals and i always love those. i saw one article that described pass the baby as an exploration into kraut rock and post rock, which is pretty crazy. ive heard there are a few really beautiful ballads and lots of nice harmonies and some "emo" moments and things in the album which all just get me excited.
give me shit for saying this but i think sure and certain is their best song since always be.

I mean, I think it's hard for me to really articulate how I feel about chase and invented. I think I've said before that Damage felt like the band returned to a sound that was comfortable for them and it sounded distinctly JEW for me. There are great songs on Chase and Invented. Invented title track is a really good song that is well-written and more creative than a lot of what the band does, so it deserves credit. But something about those two albums just never quite felt like the band I grew up with and I can't put my finger on it. I don't know if it's the songwriting or the production. Probably the production because the demo version of Dizzy felt like the band I knew. From an objective standpoint I can't criticise the songs Dizzy or Invented. But from a personal, much more subjective view... they didn't connect with me like the older stuff did. For me with this band it's not really about how "good" the songs are on any creative or music level other than the feeling of it being the same band that's speaking to me. Again, hard to articulate.
It's kind of like when you're best friends with someone for many years, and then they go off to a different college for a couple of years, make some new friends and you see them now and again and they're slightly different. You can tell they still have a good heart but the stuff they're into and the friends they hang out with is a sign that they've changed in some way. Then they come back home after college and they come to hang out in your room and play playstation with you and its like "yeah, this is what I felt with this friend, and this is the connection that we had and it's still there". Jimmy Eat World have always felt like a best friend to me, ever since I first heard them 15 years ago... and Chase and Invented were like the college years where we drifted apart, and Damage + Sure and Certain is like the return to the connection we once had.

So I can't say with any solid ground that Sure and Certain is a "better" song than Invented... but it has a vibe to it and it feels the way my relationship with this band should feel. It's kind of intangible really and therefore too difficult to explain. If I was going by what is the "better" music, The Dear Hunter would be my favourite band and any one of the songs on Act V would be my song of the year. But it just can't really work that way, and because of the personal connection and friendship I have with Jimmy Eat World, there's nothing any other band can do to connect with me the way that a "comfortable" Jimmy Eat World song does, and Sure and Certain is that song and my favourite song of the year, without a shadow of a doubt.
Sorry, it's hard to explain what I mean, but trust that I don't think Invented is a bad song my any metric other than the way my heart connects with this band.
Also I don't mean to suggest that my relationship with this band is special or that anyone here doesn't totally feel the same way or agree with me, it's more just my attempts at putting it into words that might make it tough to know what I mean I don't know. But I'm not trying to be esoteric.
That was a lot of sappy, shitty rambling, sorry.
(also my comment was too long so I spread it over 2 comments)

Also I like Get Right a lot. Loved it from the live acoustic version he played live last year so I always had fairly high hopes.

I always liked Futures as a really solid 4. But apparently, this album just resonates hard with young adults. I knew Futures for a few years now, but now that I am eighteen and have to deal with some unpleasant matters (especially with my gf of two+ years), I think I can finally feel its impact. Every single song (maybe except Nothingwrong and Drugs) is just incredibly relatable.
4.5, here

It exists though. Also some people have advance copies of it. Kind of struggling a lot lately psychologically. I've found myself in a state where I realise there's not that much in life that I care about anymore, and I feel quite detached from the world around me and my memories don't feel like my memories anymore. Sort of emotionless and without any passion. Integrity Blues is kind of one of the few things in the world right now that I actually care about and that makes me actually feel a need for something. In a way maybe it's good that I don't have it yet because I'll get to look forward to it over the next month. But even then it's pretty agonising.

Sounds like you might be going through depersonalisation which I think can be a symptom of bad mental health, while its good to have something to look forward to you should try not to pin all your expectations on what is ultimately just an album. Hope you're doin ok man

Hey minty, it's easier said than done, but just try to examine all the good in your life. You're alive, which is an amazing privilege, so in order to "live," I suggest stepping out of your comfort zone and adopt a new passion. Surround yourself with people that love you, listen to whatever music makes you happy and remember that sometimes there is a reason for your suffering. Don't give up and this will pass man.
