sad rock/metal have to dumb down their sound for mainstream appeal, new songs aren't bad but mainstream is just garbage on rails overproduced drivel, when will it end

Feel like Bring Me the Horizon is about as big and as relevant as a post-2005 “metal/heavy rock” band could ever hope to be in 2020... only bigger band that comes to mind is FFDP really.

^ 100%.. I saw them at Lollapalooza last year which is insane for this genre.

Yeah it’s kinda insane how they continue to get substantially bigger each album cycle, regardless of every passing album becoming more and more “easy listening” than the last. There’s like a million bands who did that exact same thing and weren’t anywhere near as successful doing it as these guys.

I think the difference is it never felt forced coming from BMTH. Listening to That's The Spirit I never got the feeling it was done for the sake of being mainstream. Whereas with other bands it was a sudden and jarring 180 in style, for BMTH it was a slow evolution from Sempiternal to now, allowing their audience to ease into their new style and accessing a whole new audience in the process, Opeth did the same thing.

The progression is really impressive imo tbh. This band isn't always gold, but I acknowledge that they're no cookie cutter band

Sempiternal was a masterpiece. A masterpiece that is most likely impossible for them to repeat, most likely they felt they did everything they could do in the Metalcore genre and went off to explore other avenues. Plus, Oliver's health issues with his throat have made returning to that genre almost impossible without them hiring a 2nd vocalist and I don't see that happening.
