Definitely some great songs on this, pleasantly surprised. Starts off very strongly and I enjoy the vibe. Perhaps his voice is a little much at certain points, but I’m getting used to it. I’m guessing everyone else heard the National-esque melody in The Mistake?... yeah it’s a specific one.

This is one of the most intensely emotional albums I've ever heard. It's been over 2 years now, so let's revisit:

1. The Maze - 4.5/5 - Perfect opener, heavenly and uplifting. A bit short but hey, it's essentially an interlude.

2. The Gold - 4.3/5 - A good blend of MO's various styles, and solid choice as lead single. Not as emotional as most of the other songs here, but it's plenty memorable.

3. The Moth - 4.8/5 - Hazy, fuzzy electric guitars and polished vocals recall prime SSPU; one of the album's best songs.

4. Lead, SD - 5/5 - Catchiest song on the album with some very intense moments in the chorus. Excellent lyrics with subtle undertones about miscarriage, loss of child, et al.

5. The Alien - 4.5/5 - Slow burning acoustic track that feels like one long, relaxing exhale despite lyrics detailing abuse and alienation.

6. The Sunshine - 4.0/5 - Sort of just a short bridge between two better songs, but a gorgeous one at that.

7. The Grocery - 5/5 - Most heartbreaking lyrics of the entire record. Song has multiple different phases, all equally as gorgeous.

8. The Wolf - 4.8/5 - The album's dark horse track, this sleeper features an epic, swelling chorus that feels like one of the most urgent moments on the record.

9. The Mistake - 4.6/5 - Another overlooked gem, this song unravels as it progresses, eventually resulting in the sprawling "I don't want to walk away from you" verses.

10. The Parts - 4.1/5 - A bit too minimal for its own good, but Hull's echoing ruminations are both haunting and, at times, incidentally humorous (such as the line about Britney Spears).

11. The Silence - 5/5 - A towering closer with existential ramifications ("there is nothing you keep, there is only your reflection") and a 7 minute run time that builds ever so slowly to a crescendo of electric guitars and avalanching drums. For my money, it's the best MO song of all time.

The Moth is my fave so far, listened to the album 4 times today though so going to let it settle, rather than force more spins and overload myself, for now...

Still think The Mistake is a bit of a clunker but yeah this album is devastatingly good, and Grocery and Silence are both 5/5s

Not gonna lie, you guys got me psyched for this one, I get the impression this has been received so well here (and perhaps elsewhere), that it transcends the genre for some people. Kind of like how ‘The National’ have fans from almost every corner of Sputnik, a band I happen to like a lot despite only listening to indie occasionally these days.

Not really comparable stylistically but not as good as peak National tbh. This is more mature than their earlier stuff but doesn’t have the fire and passion of Mean Everything or the highs of simple math. I like all 3 albums but these guys never quite have everything fall in place at one time to deliver an all time classic, which is what I feel like happened on Boxer. Just IMO though

@itwasthatwas: I doubt this will ever top Boxer for me, but I wasn’t comparing the bands necessarily, at least not quality-wise. I was just talking about how some artists generate interest outside of their ‘field’ and The National seemed like a decent recent example, in relation to this website especially.

oh what I'd do for a Kensrue/Hull collab track (except can we time travel and get Kensrue from 2010 or so)
