i felt like there was too much "stock alt rock" songs on it. Nothing about Burn it Down, I'll Be Gone, or Lost in the Echo are any the bit interesting. Then you have Lies Greed Misery which is a joke. Remove the interlude and you have about 5 good songs left. Those being Castle of Glass, Victimized, Skin to Bone, Until it Breaks and Powerless.

'But if a track can't stand well on its own, if its entire purpose was basically to say (hey, this bridges together two far superior tracks) what's the point?'
The point is to establish either an atmosphere or mood to benefit the entire album. It's to help things flow and stop things from rushing into it too quickly - if they chopped out all of the 'filler' and just had the songs, A Thousand Suns just wouldn't work as well as it does. It would lose impact.
I do, however, agree with your statement that Minutes to Midnight features well placed experimentation and the instrumentation on that record is excellent.

the instrumentation on MTM is about as basic as your typical radio rock record tbh. There's almost nothing that really stand out in terms of its instrumentation, performances, or even its own experimentation. Pretty much the reason why I consider it the weakest LP record to date.

Well here's the thing, that's why bands release EPs; because of the fact that a release has too much filler and they decide to cut tracks and release B-Sides. I honestly don't think cutting out tracks like "War" and such would really lessen the impact of THP, in fact I think if a lot of the filler had been cut out it would have been a far better album.

yeah i agree with toondude MTM was pretty cookie cutter radio rock

the production and the opening track did that just fine, you really think that adding in 5 more interludes with political speeches really sets up "atmosphere"?

Requiem/Radiance - establishing intro to album.
Empty Spaces was a simple transition, sure.
Jordana Del Muerto - actually a well composed piece of atmosphere that features a gorgeous synth solo.
W, J & L - intro to Iridescent. Builds into it decently, maybe a little drawn out sure.
Fallout - Intro to Catalyst. Again, builds into the song decently.
These are just transitions and yes, I think they are effective enough to benefit the album atmospherically.

Jordana Del Muerto is a great track, and so is Requiem but the rest of those couldve been tacked onto their respective tracks or dont even exist at all.

why didn't they just merge Requiem and Radiance together, it makes absolutely no sense to split them into two tracks. Same thing with Empty Spaces and When They Come For Me.

It felt too contrived to me. I liked a couple of the songs on here, and the idea behind all the guest spots, but it feels very shallow and not fleshed out enough.
Hoping they shift from this sound to something different again, it might sit better with me.
