I like the fact that this one seems to get a lot more love than it used to. Never seen anyone call it outright bad but I remember a lot saying it was their weakest years back. Band is super hard to rank though because it's all amazing

Maybe because it's such a fun album to listen, badass riffs and many bangers, very replayable, i ignored everything Death did before Human for long but this one it's the most pleasent surprise to me

its a thoroughly solid osdm album that shows some glimpses into the sound of death to come
in that regard, it is the least "remarkable" death album, although by 1990 standards it still whooped most bands' arses by a large margin. it's also sandwiched between leprosy which is one of the most vicious and energetic metal records of the 80s, and human which is, well, human, peak death.
that said i'd still take this over tsop honestly

for different reasons, I think it is a tossup between this and tsop for weakest death record

SBG it's easily the weakest to me so far, but i'm still on revisiting discog duty

where sbg shines is in its energy and brevity
it's fast and aggressive, but with substantially better songwriting than a lot of other extreme metal acts of the mid 80s

"but with substantially better songwriting than a lot of other extreme metal acts of the mid 80s"
Agree, the purest dm at the time

I'd put this slightly above sbg. About equal with Leprosy.

Low Life's riff on the 00:53 mark it's fucking irresistible, shit's too good

I'm going through a big osdm phase atm and I'm flogging this and Leprosy a lot.
I love sbg, but if I had to pick a least favourite Death record that'd probably probably be it. Out of their first three, it's the one I listen to least

SBG it's like algebra 1 in osdm so no surprise there

^Reminds me, I had a friend in high school who insisted sbg was more of a thrash album. Dude had a point - Death got the sound just right with Leprosy.

Scream Bloody Gore has went up in the ranking for me the past year or so even though it was the least played for me for the longest. When I was first discovering death metal it was my favorite of their straight death metal stuff

if you pay closer attention when blasting sbg, you can still hear parts of chuck's trademark songwriting. nice bass, nice fills, memorable riffs. its not just straight raw blasting like sepultura's early stuff or something

True. Guess it just started relatively raw, and then became more refined over the years.
