From just watching documentaries and videos and stuff it seems to me like James actually writes stuff while Lars just gives his opinion on everything.

James is def the main songwriter. Lars usually contributes to minor touch-ups and/or gives his opinion on what should be changed. so like James writes a riff that's like "00000454" but Lars is like "should be longer" so James writes a new riff that's longer.
