It's his ultimate pretentious endeavour and that's saying something

My gf at the time this came out threatened to remove my testicles if I ever played the song in full while she was in earshot again - and I totally understood lol

I just wish he'd put the track marks like they do to chop up a lot of 70's multi part songs on CD versions - the acoustic section at the end is a standalone beaut

I don't even expect people to give the music I listen to a chance anymore. It's strange how my taste can be relatively common by this site's standards yet seem so foreign to anyone in the real world. Like, I played mewithoutYou (who aren't even that weird) near my wife one time and she couldn't even fathom that it was music.

This thing came out of nowhere though

Carrie & Lowell is undeniably beautiful but I give this the nod cuz he like stretched his sound his far as it could go and then bedazzled the chit out of it

Messy album. The stuff that works here is up there with his best though

But that's what I love about it. 'Illinois' just seems a bit too clean cut for me at times. This lets go and really risks falling flat on its face, but never does.

I'm pleased he made this.

I'm even more pleased he followed it with 'Carrie and Lowell'.

Glad we can agree on that. If it weren't for this directly preceding C&L. The line "in the veil of great disguises, how do I live with your ghost" from The Only Thing probably wouldn't had hit me as hard.

The lyrics on 'C&L' are just another level for him

Yeah, some of the most heart-wrenching stuff he's ever written. This just edges it out because of the instrumental aspect, as well as this having some lyrical gems as well.

Love the lyrics to 'Now That I'm Older' and 'Futile Devices', those two and the instrumentally insane t/t are my favourites
