But all the other songs are pretty bad. Except Peruvian Skies maybe

Agreed beef, those are some of their best songs for sure.
Even the weaker songs on FII aren't that weak compared to post-6 Degrees DT standards.

Train of Thought is a good album. Besides the atrocious Honor Thy Father and This Dying Soul, every other song is either very solid or very good overall. I mean, you have Endless Sacrifice, In The Name of God, and stream on it and you're saying it's weak?
Better than FII all the way

I like Falling into Infinity. Just because the songs are more accessible and watered down, doesn't mean they're bad by any means. I think that a lot of the people who complain about the record usually prefer the more wankish DT. I like the emotional content of songs like Hollow Years and Trial of Tears

I agree about the emotional content having more than the solo wankery stuff. I'm not a big fan of FII but I do wish DT will make an album like that in the near future

"Trial of Tears" is definitely a hard 5 prog song.

"DT was one of those bands I grew up with but at almost 20 yrs old now I feel like I've kind of outgrown them"
this is spot on. they're like that cool, different band you find when you're in high school. but once you get on it's boring as hell

In general DT has lost points from me, but not this one. I actually like this more than I did before.

Six Degrees, this and Metropolis are all nostalia heavy albums. I think if i was introduced to them now from someone else, I wouldn't like it as much

This entire band is nostalgic for me with the exception of the last three records.

Agreed. Even SC has some nostalgia for me but I notice its flaws all too well now. Anyone think things would be different/better if Portnoy stayed?
|

Album Rating: 4.5 | Sound Off
Yes, things would have been better imo. Mike Mangini's technique is amazing, but I don't think his drumming really has the personality (per se) of Portnoy's work
|

don't really care at this point lol

Safe to say Portnoy at least liked venturing into more sounds more. Also, I really miss the darker song writing capability of Portnoy as it really brought something different to separate the cheese that petrucci sometimes came up with.
Tis a shame

their darker stuff was the best. disc 1 of six degrees and train of thought are the only things worth going back to

But personally, I think the worst member of the band overall is Jordan Rudess. He's a fantastic player, but think about how much the band's songwriting has suffered since his arrival (barring Metropolis). I have a feeling that he's been heavily influencing DT's modern sound and excessive noodling quite a lot
