If Titus Andronicus' debut was the promising little underdog, then 'The Monitor' is its ambitious, stubborn & overblown big brother. Using the Civil War as a metaphor, the New Jersey band bring in guest vocals & many value-adding instruments... Usually on the latter parts of songs to save a rambling mess. The better production often works against it since it spotlights Patrick Stickles' drunken, tuneless vocals that are regularly covered up by gang chants. The 14 minute closer is great, but 65 minutes is a chore to get through overall. Recommended Tracks: The Battle of Hampton Roads, A More Perfect Union & A Pot in Which to Piss.

I don't see how the length of this album detracts from the experience one bit.

The ratings on this page are better.

And it IS a f'n chore imo. It took me on the 3rd listen to get through it all. I prefer the bad production on their debut muffling Stickles' off-key singing. The only reason why I rated this the same is because the opener & closer are indeed really good.

Let me play devil's advocate:

"Hey fellas, this extra money we have makes Patrick sound really bad. How can we cover him up? ... I know, lets throw in some gang vocals! ... Yeah, but we wanna make this album over an hour, so we can only get away with that so long ... Nah, don't worry about it ... We'll throw in more gang vocals later ... But then we'll have to write another lyric for them ... Nah, we'll just say the same thing"

"How about the guitar? How can we get away with using 3 guitarists & writing similar riffs for over an hour?... We'll do what everyone else does; Go kitchen sink & throw in a few more instruments. Bagpipes sound cool. How about some horns?"

"Who the f**k decided this album should be over an hour anyway? Patrick... F**ker's always drunk. No wonder"

I think what you are trying to say Hep is that you have to be in the mood for it. Could well be & I can see why people like it because of that. I did try listening in a few different moods, settings, etc...
