I love Maiden, but when they go really heavy on the triplets it irritates the shit out of me. I definitely feel like Priest are better songwriters. Maiden has jams though.

If anything, at least Halford is way better than Dickinson in my book. But either way, my problem with Maiden is that they get really samey after a while. They are great players and have made some truly kickass songs, but it feels as though so many of their songs are just too similar in style and execution. Not enough risks imo

Surprisingly, Final Frontier and Brave New World are two of my favorite Maiden albums. And when it comes to 80s work, Number of the Beast still wins for me

Yeah, I do find Priest's music more tasteful, engaging and entertaining than Maiden's, much as I've grown to appreciate Maiden's music more over time. I'm particularly fond of the DiAnno Era.

I'm with Menawati in terms of saying I prefer Di'Anno's vocals to Dickinson's. But I still prefer the music and musicianship of the Dickinson era

Maiden were always better at hitting, though. Sure, I'll take Painkiller over Powerslave, Sad Wings over Number of the Beast, Stained Class over Seventh Son. But Priest missed a lot of marks when they tried experimenting, while Maiden's first 7 albums are easily some of the best metal albums of all time.

Why do Priest/Maiden discussions always go in circles?

It's interesting because when Dickinson left Maiden after Fear of the Dark he gave an interview stating that he felt after The Number of the Beast they did the same thing again and again.

There isnt much difference between the Dickinson albums. Even Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son were pretty much like the previous albums except with synths.

Yeah I obviously have the utmost respect for Bruce Bruce and you Nero m/ but I feel that there's enough variety within the context of a given sound. The first Maiden Dickinson albums were heavily influenced by NWOBHM whereas their later 80s stuff have a lot of progressive tendencies.
