@Choccy: You'll come back to them at some time and embrace their awesomeness again, a good wine needs to ripen ;)

I don't think DT work like that sadly, especially with me getting further and further away from highly technical music

agreed I mostly just jam Emmure these days

@Tempest-- Actually, their debut is nice, and its songs' names remind of Pink Floyd (Set the Controls
for the Heart of the Sun // The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun, Let There Be More Light // Light Fuse
and Get Away) [I know this is not enough to remind me of them but ok]
But, seriously, if it wasn't for The Ytsezam, people would seldom listen to this. The vocals are
horrendous. To high pitched and Power-y for a prog metal band.

Thought the same way several years back, but there are stages in life where my body and soul just craves their music.

I know, some times you just need endless soloing and cheesy lyrics!

I crave a song like Fatal Tragedy quite a lot, but none of the cheesy stuff

Whenever I crave for some DT, I usually listen to the 1991 - 1999 era...

The latest album I crave is 6deg. Nothing from SC onwards is really worth craving

They often deliver high quality cheese which is very enjoyable for me from time to time. The boundary between cheesy and touching can be a very narrow one.

Six Degrees is their last true masterpiece, craveworthy indeed...

I agree. In my opinion, I just think it sounds uninspired and plastic. I know they're trying to be meaningful, but none of it comes off as anything truly emotional or heartfelt. It just sounds like they're doing it because they can, rather than doing it because they mean it. Like, compare The Bigger Picture and The Best of Times. It's pretty clear where the true emotion lies

It's so interesting how different opinions can be. I think The Best of Times is pretentious and cheesy as fuck, for me the weakest song on BC&SL. I prefer The Bigger Picture by far (probably I'm pretty much alone with this opinion though...).

The bit after the violin part and "the fleeting winds of time" is kinda cheesy, but it works there. I like how it doesn't just jump into the track and has that meaningful mellow part unlike The Bigger Picture, which is supposed to 'soar' but it doesn't get higher than my ankles.
Yeah... opinions huh?

How would you define cheese? No boundaries, whatever you think cheese is in music...

Lol, tough question Mythodea and I get the feeling whatever I try to say won't come off in the way I intend it to be.
I suppose I'd define it as a stale attempt at conveying the extremes of emotions (be it joy or sorrow) which makes it sound shallow.

I'm asking because when Epica's album came out two months ago, a lot of people were nagging because of ''cheese''. The songs wheren't trying to convey any extreme emotion. They were just playing loud symphonic metal!
