I always thought he was a good vocalist, very unique voice.

"i think shadows's singing is better than ever so idk wut these other ppl be thinkin' they must be sm0kin cr@ck or somethin'"
Lmao this is such a wild and objectively wrong thing to think with your actual brain but it's cool, you enjoy.
His range is absolutely squashed and you can very much hear how strained and exhausted and in pain his vocal chords are through a large portion of this.
Cosmic and the more mellow or effects heavy moments are where he sounds the most fine for sure but there's certainly nothing on the album that ~wows~ me in regards to the vocals.

There’s a bunch of videos from last nights tour kickoff and he sounded pretty good.

yeah he sounds like his old self in the recent live shows
i know towards the end of the stage cycle he was sounding really awful live, and this album was partially recorded before the pandemic even... could explain why.
he's also said in interviews he straight up "didn't want to sound like m shadows" on this album which makes me think some of it was maybe intentional?

It’s absolutely intentional.
When Nobody dropped, everyone commented (including me) that he was done. No matter how good the songwriting was his vocals were shot.
Yeah, nah. He’s definitely not in his prime anymore but he’s just fine. Hell, he sounds fucking great considering he spent the first two records literally shredding his vocal chords.

I’m not sure about that but it’s a damn good song. I will say the 1-2 punch with Mattel is the best 1-2 punch to open an album….

wait woah i like game over but it is far closer to their worst than their best
unholy confessions, beast and the harlot, critical acclaim, nightmare, and the stage are all top 10 a7x tracks period. would even say shepherd of fire is better
game over prob isn't even a top 5 track on this album

I’ve heard about two thirds so far. Cosmic is great, We Love You is interesting. Other than cosmic, all of the tracks so far have some stuff I like and some stuff I don’t. These guys are such a what if band - most of their albums show something interesting and then make some creative choices that bring it down.
In this case, Shadows performance here raises a what if scenario for all of their albums post WTF - what if he just leaned into his natural baritone more, didn’t push so far out of his comfortable range, and realized he didn’t have to try and dominate every track and actually let the music breathe in 2005? Not only would the older albums have been better, he wouldn’t sound so shot on here and on the Stage.

This honestly sounds like it could have been demo tracks of a weird City of Evil followup. There's less reverb on Shadow's vocals, and overall more focus on the core instrumentals and their effects rather than other elements like orchestras that the band is known for. Very surprising the vibe they went for.

Critical Acclaim is an embarrassment of a song and sealed their fate as a bro metal car crash for most of the next decade
