Seen this album being discussed a lot and been wondering what palimpsest means:

"A palimpsest is a written document, a layered object, or a space where older text or forms have been scraped or washed away and replaced with new material, while still leaving visible traces of the past."

Interesting meaning but ugly word

Not a huge fan of this one honestly. But Rivet is goated

I'm coming into this after falling in love with Volition. I actually find this a tad more accessible on the whole, Volition is full of left turns and surprises, whereas this feels more curated for a consistent experience. It's easier to consume, however, it is lacking those big surprise moments (Drumhead Trial's chaotic mid section springs to mind). I did have to warm to the vocals on here though, definitely feeling more theatrical. That said, on songs like "All Hands" and "The Fireside" the vocals actually propel the music to new heights, making for two of the strongest tracks on the record for me.

Big shoutout to Gardenias too, some insane grooves and intensity throughout that song. Still early days for me, but Volition is sitting at a 4, and I like this one a little less so a 3.5 seems fair. However if I do bump Volition to a 4.5 (I'm so tempted) then I'd likely bump this to a 4. Excited to delve deeper into the PTH discography!

Nah this is actually a 4. Reverie just clicked with me, so good!

"it is lacking those big surprise moments" I agree that it's maybe less chaotic, but I feel like that plays perfectly into the package as a whole. I'll take grandiose, monumental moments like the end of "From the Sky" or "Soliloquy" any day.

That being said, I do need to do a album run through now that "Within" is out to power ranks these bad boys.

I think I'm starting to like this more than Volition. There's something really endearing about it, I just keep coming back for more and discovering new things. Already feeling a bit nostalgic about Rivet too for some reason, like it's sinking it's way into my soul lol

Rivet was one of those songs that just hit me so hard when it dropped. With all the MAGA shit and divisive messaging from its political leaders, it was a breath of fresh air to hear someone take something many of us want, a "great" America, and use its ugliness to hint at how we might grow in order to get there.
