Mxtabs 2003 join date crew checking in.
This was a good thread. A lot of refreshingly insightful posts that I don't really have anything to add to, but made me want to come out of the woodwork.
I'm with relinquished on most of this -I also grew up calling bands like Pelican atmospheric sludge. Post-metal came into the broader consciousness later, and it's still weird to me to see all those bands now introduced under that vague and generally meaningless title. But I agree with Maniac and Full that its a broader umbrella, and I think Ashes Against the Grain definitely fits within that.

There is a japanese band called Zeni Geva, its like an old Neurosis mixed with Godflesh. These guys were shaping something similiar to post-metal in early 90s. For anyone who wants to track post-metal/atmo-sludge/artcore of an early era, check them out.
