Just very flat sounding.

just listened to it again, and it's just had all the interesting aspects of the band stripped away from it. just really sugary j-rock instrumentation with symphonic undertones and a pop-y hook. worst song out of the bunch by far.

Up there with the worst tracks I've heard by them tbh.

DEG's not invincible and I think MACABRE early on proved it to be the case, and this shaping up to be the case w/this album. Yeah, Ranunculus is just...BASIC. This is only marginally better than the DudzettE at their worst, and that only thing that has it going for it is Kyo on vocals.
That's okay, though. DEG had a good run of albums, it shouldn't be surprising that it was gonna end at some point (i.e. due to disbandment or a dud album). I was moving onto other stuff anyway and there's a couple of albums I was more looking forward to this month...

"the drums aren't sounding too great"
It's mostly the cymbals that annoy me, they sound so scratchy.
Anyway, pointless song, and in its best moments it's just a Kyo show. Could have easily been a standard Sukekiyo ballad. Sooo yeah, I agree with the overall sentiment on this site.

I feel like they just phoned in this album for the sake of reaching the 10 album/20 year milestone. The [Mode of...] series was great...but IMO they could've just disbanded with that and still have a pretty good legacy.

Don't really get the hate tbh. Yeah it sounds more poppy than your standard DeG, but it's still undeniably DeG even if X-Japan influence shines through heavily. Seems more of a hyperbolic "ewww its different" reaction to me. Just another DeG single that sounds odd at first but people will end up liking.

Finally got to listen the song expecting the worst after all the comments and... well, I don't get the hate either. It's nothing new or particularly exciting for sure, but not bad at all. I mean, they've had songs in this vein for a good while, they've just been less common for the past few albums. We'll have to wait and see, I was a bit wary about Arche when Sustain the Untruth came out and it ended up being one of their best albums, so who knows.

Hate is not the right word, I think we all are just very sceptical. And it's justified. Do you remember Rinkaku? Or any ballad on the last three albums? You just can't tell me this song accomplishes anything noticable except for being "okay" or "nice to listen to". That's not what DEG usually do. So no, not hate, just - usually I feel different after listening a DEG song than before listening to it. I don't see how this song could do that.

Oh on that I agree, it's nowhere near as good as Rinkaku or Vanitas for example (both among my top 10 DEG songs), but I don't think it's a bad song either. The thing is, they've set the bar so high with these last three albums (eventhough my favourite overall is still Kisou) that they're bound to disappoint some people unless they manage to keep that level, and that's a monumental task even for them. And moreso knowing how much they like to experiment and switch up styles.

"Seems more of a hyperbolic "ewww its different" reaction to me."
the "it's different" comment is way out for me. this is diru we're talking about here, different is the norm with these guys. My beef with this song in particular is because it sounds like damn derivative, stripped basic and embraces a really generic j-rock sound in a way that loses all the progression they've made up to this point.

I've come to expect nothing short of exceptional with these boys, but the singles for this new LP are far, far removed from that.

What singles are already available, I only know Ranunculus which is pretty shallow and bland btw.
