The problem with considering grunge a sub-genre rather than a scene is that most of the bands called grunge don't have any common ground other than being alternative rock
Nirvana, Mundhoney, Hole and bands like that are punk (and occasional noise rock) influenced alt rock
Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and bands like that are metal influenced alt rock
Pearl Jam is just hard rock/alt rock
Screaming Trees is psychedelic influenced alt rock
Like none of these have anything in common other than being alt rock from Seattle
and non-Seattle bands like Stone Temple Pilots, L7, and Smashing Pumpkins are considered grunge for reasons that almost seem entirely random.

all of those bands definitely have a distinct common ground sound-wise, what are you talking about? of course bands are gonna sound different and have different influences within a genre or style

^exactly why grunge isn't a genre.
Something like "shoegaze" is acceptable as a genre being named after a movement because the artists share a common sound (although nothing will ever come to the pinnical of what Loveless is from the ingenuity of sampling feedback and unorthodox usage of the guitar) but generally, everything within its label is recognizable as just that. Grunge just started being thrown around because of it becoming comercialized by the media and the mass of people started labeling everything alt rock at that time as being just that
@jasdevi fuckin 4th of July by Soundgarden sounds nothing like Rooster by AIC, Even Flow by Pearl Jam, and Territorial Pissings by Nirvana. Their differences are very blatant

that is absolutely not a good reason for saying that grunge is the special exception to being called a genre, I'm pretty sure shoegaze also started out as a media buzzword, but people within said scene had similar sounds/ideas and people started buying into this style and playing it there own way, which is also true for grunge

yeah arguing that grunge isn't a genre but shoegaze is... thats silly. bands labeled as shoegaze have just as wide if not a wider spectrum then grunge bands imo (though I admit I'm not too well versed on grunge), and the term is literally derived from their image and not their sound. I'm a huge fan of shoegaze and I'm willing to concede that its a genre despite being an awful name/ way too broad of a spectrum. also lol at loveless not being rivaled, only reason I 5'd it over a lot of other albums in the genre because its truly a 'classic' in every sense of the word, its been topped in the genre on numerous occasion, some even before its release (six's dig as an example)
