yeah these lyrics suck I'd rather try and comprehend the advanced scriptures of King Crimson or Yes or Rush or if I'm feeling daring Cynic's newest album

Yeah SpaceMan that's an extremely yang solution :D

Seriously though, I mean I love Tool but the lyrics on this album are bullshit wank that they try to pass as meaningful metaphysical speculation so that their shite fanbase can have something to analyse repeatedly and endlessly over and over and over until time itself comes to an end

The reason why Aenima is a better album is because its more passionate and because Maynard's a fantastic lyricist when he's just writing admittedly silly but angry and passionate lyrics that actually mean something like the title track, Hooker With a Penis, take your pick

not this pseudo-spiritual bollocks which they can get away with maybe on Third Eye but not any more than that

ok done

whoa nice response Rowan haha and I can agree with most of it, Aenima is definitely the more emotional and passionate album but if you don't like his metaphysical lyrics then I can see why you'd knock the lyrics on this one. I actually "got into" Tool because a lot of my spiritual beliefs were already in line with what Maynard's and Carry's are and they bleed that into their music quite frequently. I find the Lateralus to have pretty straight forward lyrics so its a lot harder to analyze deeper then Aenima which is filled with metaphors and deeper meanings. I think maynard is a great lyricist especially compared to most other prog but again I get where you're coming from with how preachy their New Age beliefs can be

@Buttery they're obviously not meaningful in any sort of significant "whoa this has opened my eyes to a new perspective on life" way but they're passionate and they actually have meaning. Which is better than half-arsed ramblings about colours which try to be all "open your eyes to this" but fail because they have no inner meaning.

@mongi just my opinion broman

@SpaceMan Thanks, I guess I just don't get it. Its not that I'm knocking the fact that they have spiritual beliefs and to be honest I don't care if they want to preach to me, I just wish they and their fans wouldn't act like listening to this album is some sort of surreal, spiritual experience. I find no deeper meaning to this album under all Maynard's vague, mystical hinting at some sort of bigger picture that he never bothers to bring into focus. I guess what I'm trying to say is he's all style and no substance, and the reason this album is a 4.5 is because it has fucking awesome MUSIC on it and nothing to do with any spiritual experience

In your defense it was a very subtle pun, a lot of Textures to it :D and on that note I shall go to bed

"he's all style and no substance"

Aww bro you need to listen to more APC and the title track of 10,000 Days more then. He's got tons of substance. However, I will agree that I hate when fans act like this is some sort of transcending experience. This is a hard 5 but there I albums that are far more transcending than this not gonna lie. Also that big picture he's talking about he clearly doesn't want to reveal because Maynard doesn't like spoon feeding people the meaning to his lyrics.

Rowan, read the lyrics to Reflection, understand them and then see where you stand. I'm not being condescending, but

those lyrics are gold bro. Yes, Maynard is hit or miss, but he smashes it when he decides to deliver.

Yea another fantastically written song. I don't care if someone doesn't like his lyrics on here, but to say they're meaningless is taking it a bit far imo
