We Are the Romans also has some pauses, but also some substance. This album has 50% substance, 50% recycling.

The disparity between here and RYM is fascinating

Honestly, while I find that the review is understandable, I think that can only be through the eyes of someone who's not really into Mathcore, let alone Djent. Most of the complaints are literally against what makes this a total banger for TTDTE listeners. "It's abrasive", well ofc it is! It'd meant to be, and for those who are not used to it, it's more likely gonna be a headache. The only point I do agree on is the Interludes. Many bands of these genres fail to actually write cohesive interludes and be able to use those melodies again as a Leitmotiv properly. The leitmotiv of this album is really just "there", and doesn't connect with anything other than itself.
Other than that, this is a total headbanger.

Haha, one of my first comments on this site gave out about this review. I think a newer member comes along every few months to share the sentiment. You prompted me to re-read the review, has it ever been established if Hold the Line is a pisstake or a genuine tribute to the troops? Whether its a goofy tribute or a hilarious spoof doesn't undermine it either way for me.

Imo they were truly the pioneers of the djenty math rock genre (or at least a subgenre within that vague classification), and unfortunately the bands in history that are ahead of their time often don’t get the recognition they “deserved” at the time
This albums fucking bops but I can understand why it was very divisive at the time, this is a LOT to take in for someone who’s never heard anything like this lol
Btw not saying this album is some all time classic or anything, but it’s hard to deny how influential it was for basically the following decade+

It’d be sick if they rereleased it with good modern production
