It depends on if the artist/label really cares enough to get it done right, all my dubstep vinyl, specifically all my records from Tempa, sound amazing because they strive for sound quality and don't cut corners. i've got a few records in my collection that I kinda wish I hadn't bought because they got cut poorly and I could've been fine with the digi files

Heavier, thicker vinyl gives room for deeper grooves which = better sounding vinyl.
Grooves in the vinyl are only as deep as the grooves in the original lacquer, which is never anywhere near as deep as the record is, even the thinner ones.
Also possible that vinyl records have a lower quality now because now they're made using digital recordings rather than the reels. Although that's more subjective.
