the last 2 are just a bit too clean for me i do enjoy them in parts but for me it likes the weight that those 2 firsts albums (first especially) and this ofcourse all have.

new album is great
it feels a bit closer to the last 40 watt sun than to warning but it definitely uses a lot of similar guitar motifs to warning
i think the cleaner sound makes sense for the record. it's clear he wanted to go for more of the spacious, dynamic sound closer to the live performance of watching from a distance. feels more floaty than oppressive like this album is.
i do think he overdoes the vocals a bit. every line is in his really high register and it feels a bit overwrought. i'd have preferred some more songs where the vocals are more subtle such as 'bridges' just to make it sound more varied. i think that's the biggest flaw on the record really - by the end it just gets a bit grating and somewhat undersells the clearly emotional delivery. it was the biggest flaw in the last 40 watt sun too - he absolutely dominates the mix.
it's obviously not as good as this, but nobody expected that.

I am not a doom head at all but this was incredible. His voice is so perfect for the crushing sorrowful riffs. Gonna need to give the new one a spin when it comes out in my time zone.
