i've always found with Alligator that Berninger's lyrics save the record from collapsing on how simple it is, which in turn makes the music sound amazing.

Ya that's probably why I don't like alligator as much, eno. Lyrics are my last concern, if the music isn't there then its very tough for me to enjoy it

the last 4 songs on alligator is the best stretch of music they've ever made but as a whole Boxer trumps all. I agree that it is somewhat claustrophobic but i find that Berninger's lyrics are what makes it that way and it is purely intentional and i love that mood it creates.

the ending part of "just tie your woman to your wrists" on guest room sort of epitomizes boxer, the way it blossoms so subtlety and its so gorgeous and moving

redsky: is it a cardinal sin that I find the first six on alligator to be more amazing as a whole? the last 4 have some of the best songs, but particularly the progression from lit-up to baby we'll be fine I find to be really album-like and cohesive.

nononononono people need to stop thinking that
Take all your reasons and take them away
To the middle of nowhere, and on your way home
Throw from your window your record collection
They all run together and never make sense
But that's how we like it, and that's all we want
Something to cry for, and something to hunt
some of the best lyrics on the album

yeah I've been with Eno on pretty much everything haha (esp the part about the end of Guest Room epitomizing Boxer)
and yeah All the Wine is easily a top 3 National song for me, if not #1

the song is rather dull musically and not even the lyrics can save it

Lit Up is probably my favorite song off the album
cause you're the lowlife of the party, bad blood
bad blood for everybody
i'm in control and i believe
chorus is so fucking nostalgic as well

the overly treblelly production takes some getting used to
